Um ... since this is a "meeting place for all members" (translation: more than one member), wouldn't the correct term be Members' Lounge...?"

hehe

TRUE STORY

My school has been putting on a major addition... The first thing they did was to put locks on the new bathrooms that would automatically lock us out if the door shut - so we had to prop them open with chairs when they were unoccupied... Then - they fixed that with new locks, and finally got signs on the doors... Here's what I saw one morning...

Teachers' Lounge - correct
Mens' - blooper
Womens' - blooper

If those bloopers weren't bad enough - The male teachers came out of their newly designated bathroom and asked "Why is the 'feminine hygiene' dispenser in our bathroom?"

Needless to say, they took the signs down immediately - They got them reprinted - spelled properly... Men's and Women's... and reposted them... On the wrong doors AGAIN!!!!....

Rats!! I had some sweet visions of what I'd do when I borrowed a member from Ron. Sigh! Ok..so the name gets longer and longer. Next thing you know it will be named:

Lounge for People Who Are Members of The Passions in Poetry Forums

And how does it look in 'Today's Topics'? What? You say it's not on the list anymore.. odd.....

Just thought I'd offer this explanation as a possible way out of this conundrum:

"Don't confuse an adjectival label ending in s with the need for a possessive. Sometimes it's not easy to tell which is which. Do you attend a writers' conference or a writers conference? If it's a group of writers attending a conference, you want the plural ending, writers. If the conference actually belongs to the writers, then you'd want the possessive form, writers'. If you can insert another modifer between the -s word and whatever it modifies, you're probably dealing with a possessive. Additional modifiers will also help determine which form to use.

Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe threw three touchdown passes. (plural as modifier)

The Patriots' [new] quarterback, Drew Bledsoe, threw three touchdown passes. (possessive as modifier]"

So, I guess the question is whether we actually own this lounge.

Um... I've been here in New England for awhile now... Brad, my friend... The Patriots is/are a collective noun... The locker room belonging to the Patriots would certainly be the Patriots' locker room, wouldn't it? I see no way to omit our members' apostrophe here in their very own lounge and still be grammatically correct...

I don't know much about grammar and syntax, but I DO know this was wrong:

"Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe threw three touchdown passes."

Brad, if you're talking Patriots, I'm afraid that would be "... threw three interceptions.."

Pray silence for your moderator! (the other one's out trying to find the coffee bar )

The Lounge for People Who Are Members is a lounge for all members and could, therefore, be described as a members' lounge.

Every member, however, can help make this lounge a success and a little home away from home by their posts. So.... from that respect, it could also be that member's lounge.

See? perfectly clear!

Obviously those examples were not as clear as I'd thought but both are still acceptable depending on what you are doing.

The Patriots organization . . .

New England Patriots Executive Vice President Jonathan Kraft shared his family's vision for . . .

There is no need for an apostrophe because Patriots here is an adjective, a description of the organization or the EVP -- possessiveness is not the issue. In the first example, if one writes Patriots' organization, you miss the whole point of the adjective label in the first place.

If taken out of the player/team context, I hope the point becomes clearer.

As a result:

Patriots quarterback . . . .
acceptable

The Patriots' quarterback . . . .
acceptable

The Patriot's quarteback . . . .
Might mean Mel Gibson's quarterback

As a result, Members Lounge and Members' Lounge are acceptable.

Actually, I was really looking for a reason to argue that the orginal Member's Lounge is perfectly acceptable (if not, a lot of people out there are making the same mistake). My thinking was that Member is a type of person, not the individual, and can therefore be rendered singular. The plural in this sense would mean multiple types of members, not multiple individual members.
But I haven't found that reasoning yet so for the moment it is purely conjecture.

aicre,
Never tell me something is wrong or right . I make a living out of correcting people who do that for a living (Korean English Professors).

Brad

PS The original examples were from a Grammar website by the way (I put the whole thing in quotes, you know)-- I forget which one at the moment but if you want, I'll give you the address.

Well, I'm kinda glad of the change from Members Lounge. This should end any confusion as to the purpose of this room. It is NOT a place where you become a member, for starters.
Now, surely you would think that no one would be that bereft of common sense. Well, I live in Yuma, Arizona, the place that receives a slew of 'snowbirds' (northern visitors), who (though they are able to drive a double-clutch, navigate a convoluted highway system, and manage multiple residences) still find a very simple drivers license form (name, address, phone, proof of identification) complicated, and will, for some odd reason, visit state and governemenal offices the day after a major holiday. Never underestimate human stupidity.

Pete, I'm afraid I'm hopelessly conditioned. Unless writing dialog, I studiously avoid ending with a preposition. Just can't help it.

But, in spite of Churchill's famous wit, it's rarely that difficult. Or, to paraphrase your paraphrase, "It's a situation easy to tolerate."

Speaking of 'mistakes,' and I should have saved it, but didn't.

I got an email from someone off the main site. Our email not showing anymore, I got the blurb at the end of the email saying it wasn't showing and that URL's would be taken out as well, to protect all of "passsions" poets.

It don't show up like that on the main site though. LOL

"Passsions in Poetry" now! LOL
