recently i'm been surprised to find out the majority of people dream in black and white, because i ALWAYS dream in color, only my nightmares are black and white. I have attributed this to the fact that i'm greatly involved in painting/drawing/and jewlery making, therefore i'm a person who relies heavily on visual stimulation (my handwriting confirms this, yes i'm into graphology too =P)so anyhow...lets see if that's really true....tell me about your dreams...do you dream in color too?

You're not the only one who was suprised.
The first time I heard this I thought I was actually being joked with.
I too dream in color....nightmares are in color as well.

Though I'm not an artist.....but I am a photographer.
Then again, I also shoot black & white.
So, I'm not sure if that says anything! LOL

Interesting point you've made here.
Wonder how many do dream in color and how many dream in black & white?????

It's been said that only women dream in color. . . I don't know why though. . . perhaps it's becasue women are more in touch with their emotions and feelings so that these "color" their dreams. . .

Now, that having been said, where does that put me??  I always dream in color. . . ever since I was old enough to know what dreams were. . .

hmmmmmmmmmmmm. . .

Color more vivid in my dreams than when I'm awake. I wonder who said we dream in black/white. Evidently they didn't ask us!!!

Colour

absolutely colour

I've had only one vivid horror-story dream in black and white and it was like something straight from Hitchcock...(including a dead woman standing in front of a bush whose head was all bloody at the back....brrrrr)

I think it was SUPPOSED to be black and white...

I was beginning to think the whole b&w thing was a myth.

Surprisingly, there is very little information about the role that dreaming in color plays in dreams and dream interpretation. . .

It's been thought that colors in dreams are representative of feelings locked in the subconscious. . . there has also been much made recently about "Color Analysis" and the role that color plays in our lives. . . how it makes us feel. . . but what about dreaming in color??  Right now, I would say that the jury is out. . . way out. . .as there have been no studies on dreaming in color.

So, I ask you that dream in color. . . what kinds of feelings does it stir in you?  Do you find that you always dream in color?  Do you find that you tend to remember more about your dreams when you dream in color?

Have you ever dreamed in B/W??  And, how did that make you feel??  Can you remember what you were going through at the time that you did dream in B/W???

I'm very interested in seeing what you all have to say about this. . . who knows???  We could start our own little "dream study" right here. . .

severn- wooohoo!! HITCHCOCK!! i adore hitchcock!! I'm entirely obsessed with hitchcock!! funny we both have nightmares in bk and white. MOST of my nightmares hav been in black and white all though not ALL...i have had two or three technicolors.

Right on Sven!! i was waiting for someon to get interested...dream study up and away!!Now i'll talk about my dreams a bit,and answer you ever so leading questions(are you a pyschologist??)
1.feelings are diverse,it depends on the dream. If it's a happy dream,i feel happy,if someone has died i wake up crying,if it's a violent dream (i've had dreams where i kill people, which does not sound like a good thing!! They were strangers though,so i guess that's better than having dreams about killing my friends!!) i wake up frightened. I am esp. frightened and very shaken up when i am the one doing the chasing. The colors always go with the dream and the mood,my reactons are always in accord with that, although i often notice that outside scenes are esp. vibrant so vibrant the sunlight almost hurts my eyes,i don't think i've ever had a dreamwhere i went outside and it was winter....i wonder what that means??!!*^

2.No I do not always dream in color, but I have had maybe 5 nightmares in bk and white as long as I can remember.

3.No,the bk/whts are just as vivid, but terribly surreal. And usually they are “flash dreams” kind of that film technique where everything flashes and the camera kind of jiggles a lot hecticly. They are unreasonable, but disturbing. One I dreamed my room was filling with 2x2 black cubes while I lay in my bed until I could not breath,I woke up just as they were fillin in all my breathing space. It happen quick sped up and earsplitting until it reach the point where I was out of room and then it stopped suddenly and I layed there wide eyed and took in the scene before they continued and I woke up.

4. in real life I don’t remember much about the time when I was having those dreams most,it was an oppressive enviroment,I was still living with my father. Now that y mum and I have moved out and live on our own my nightmares are in color more frequently, much less bk and whites although all surreal nightmares are always bk/wht. colored nightmares are always mostly realistic.

I’m interested to see if anyone else has had similar experiences??

I dream very much in color .. some of the most memorable impressions I have ever had from my dreams have been of the vividness and/or peciliarity of some color I experienced. I think a black and white dream would be ... well, unnatural, though I can't claim to have ever had one (that I remember, anyway).

I find that when I have been depressed that I don't dream or I don't remember dreaming. After a long bout with depression, a doctor gave me antidepressant pills. The first thing I noticed was I would wake from dreames and remember everything. Usually it was dreams mixed up with my everyday life and things I saw on TV or read in the newspaper. I can't remember any in b/w.
It would make me tired when I woke up. Now no more pills and back to dreaming only once in awhile.

Who dreams in black and white???
My dreams often have a surreal quality, the colors so bright they seem luminous... *TIME FOR A BAD ANALOGY* (but one which everyone here can understand ) think of the real world as a computer set to 16 bit with the color turned almost off... my dreams are then 32 bit True Color, hue and contrast up high. I swear the difference is that severe.

I still remember a dream I had of the sunrise... the colors, and that LIGHT...OMG...still as vivid in my head just now as the instant I woke up.

Okay, now we need another thread devoted to telling dreams. Hmmmm....

Well, SF, I'm not a psychologist. . . but dreams and dream interpretation have been a hobby of mine for a long time. . . and I've always wondered about "dreaming in color" so, I figured we've got a good group here. . . why not start with them??

quote:
The colors always go with the dream and the mood,my reactons are always in accord with that, although i often notice that outside scenes are esp. vibrant so vibrant the sunlight almost hurts my eyes,i don't think i've ever had a dreamwhere i went outside and it was winter....i wonder what that means??!!*^

Now, I'd like to ask this question. . . you say here that the colors always go with the dream and the mood.  Do you mean the colors in the dream or the colors of the objects and/or the setting of the dream?  If it's the latter, then your talking about dreaming of colors again, rather than dreaming in color.

The fact that you talk about the sunlight hurting your eyes may be related to the fact that it's there to "hide" parts of the dream from you that you're either not ready or not allowed to know.   Ever have the same dream on different nights??  If you have, did you ever notice if the settings and colors were different?  And if you noticed things that weren't there before???

Your black and white dreams sound a lot like mine. . . they have that "Flash" quality to them.  I've found that dreams like these tend to be more like nightmares.  Do you find that as well??

quote:
my nightmares are in color more frequently, much less bk and whites although all surreal nightmares are always bk/wht. colored nightmares are always mostly realistic.

I find this very interesting. . . usually, from what I've read, most people have nightmares in B/W, like I said before. . . for your nightmares to be in color and to be more "realistic" is very unique.

inot2B, there's been a lot of study into the effect that antidepressants and other types of drugs can have on dreaming. . . it's been found that some of these drugs make the mind more open to remembering dreams and what not. . . but, whether or not the dreams that were had by those that were studied were their "actual" dreams or dreams that were caused by the effects of the drugs was unclear.

By "actual" dreams, I mean dreams that are directly related to happenings and events in the life of the dreamer.

Beth, are you saying that your dreams are bright?  Or that the colors are so vivid as to be harsh or blurred??

Or, are you saying that the colors that you see are true to life?  Like being there???

This is very fascinating!!!  Thanks SF for bringing this up!!!

okay i shall clarify.I mean the colors in the dream are all true to life.Or they go with the way i was feeling. For Example: When i have a dream where i am chasing or being chased to kill or be killed i am running down a long straight hallway, the walls are grey/blue,my clothes are black and shades of grey, who ever is chasing me or who ever i am chasing in the dream has on greys and blacks, but for some reason they always have something red on too. one time it was a red bandana, one time it was red shoes, one time the cuff of one of his shirts was rolled up and the underneath part was red. There is never a face, only dark hair and i beleive it's a man. Anyhow, that whole enviroment of the hallway and clothes all being drab colors goes with the gloom and doom of the dream. This dream is never particularly scary while having it,but when i wake up it freaks me out because i wonder why i had it...lol that's silly i know. But esp. when I'M the one chasing with intent to kill,i don't like that, that's not something i would even tink about doin and it scares me when i dream about it.And that particular one i have had more than once on differnt nights.
The flash bk and white dreams are always nightmares.I have had colored dreams that had the same flash quality, these dreams were also the ones with the sunlight that hurt my eyes, but they weren't really nightmares. That's interesting no?? They also always involve water. which is also strange. In one i'm standing on a diving board getting ready to jump into the pool and i look up and the green of the trees is especially bright and the sulight makes my eyes water then i jump in and when i swim back up and squeeze the water out of my eyes and look up again it's the same thing, and the sunlight makes my eyes hurt. This is all in the flash mode, which seems to make the sunlight even more stunnin like a flash bulb but yellow. Another time i was laying on the sand by the pond at my old house, when i open my eyes the sunlight hurts,i decide i'm to hot and get up and walk to the dock and jump in,when i swim back up i rub the water out of my eyes and look back at the bright yellow sand, then up to the perfect blue sky and perfect clouds, again the sunlight blinds me.I had never before now connected the similarity between these too before. The pond/dock/sand one goes on longer and i remember alot from it,most of the rest is nonesense though and i don't see a connection.I am not afraid of water,i love water when i was a kid my parents called me frog girl because i spent all day in the pond or around the pond, nothing especially bad has ever happened to me in or around water,i can't think of anything i would hide from myself that had to do with water, but that's kind of an oxymoron isn't it?? heehee
Well dr. sven,any theories??
Have you ever seen "Spellbound" with ingrid bergman?? It's a hitchcock black and white film,if you ever get the chance watch it,you'd like it i promise, all about supressed memories and it has a dream analysis sequence very interesting...if you get amc they have it on every couplafew months.I warn you it's addictable i've been known to watch it over and over until tape wears out and must record new one...heehee

I too dream mainly in colour. The colours can be very vivid at times and often stick strongly in my mind. Perhaps because I am red green colourblind, seeing these wild colours is such a luxury for me that they really stick.

I also occasionally dream in black and white. I've found these dreams to be very surreal like old silent movies. One involved a weird contraption about the length and width of a car, but twenty feet tall. It ran on 4 bicycle wheels and was driven by pedal power. Don't ask me what I was thinking about before I went to sleep that night... I haven't got a clue

Lakewalker, try this technique. . .

When you go to sleep tonight, say to yourself, "I will remember my dreams. . . " Say this to yourself over and over again until you fall asleep. You can even put this on a tape recorder and play it at a low volume while you're drifting off.

Keep a notebook by your bed and put it there before you go to sleep. . . when you wake up in the morning, pick it up, and start writing. . . don't worry about what you're writing, don't think about it. . . just let it come. . . see what happens. . .

Use to think that people dreamed in b/w because of TV…but then I recalled, We had b/w TV and I dreamed in color…remember one very visual nightmare…all in color…

but…what about flying, the sensation of the air…what about falling, gripping the bed….what about feeling?  I.e., just the other evening I dreamed about braiding someone's lovely brown hair, very silky, and the braiding was quite well done, much better than I do in real life, BUT what was interesting was in the dream I thought "but the hair is so smooth and clean and even," meaning to me, there were no "broken hairs"...

so I scrounged through my meager library and found my Dictionary of Dreams and looked up "braids" [see nothing] then look under "hair" and the closest I could find to what would have fit the dream was "If you see well kept and neatly combed hair, your fortune will improve…"

I'll take it!

I do like the studying of dreams...although I am quite the novice...

Every night, I've been saying to myself that I will remember my dreams when I wake up. It's a slow process, but so far I have had some success and it seems to be getting easier with practice

I don't ever remember dreaming in black and white either ... it seems I always dream in color. Sometimes my dreams really freak me out because my hair will be a different color, or something will be just a little off from "reality" and I recognize this and sometimes that is what I remember more than the dream.. wondering what this subtle change means or why it was different...

Another freaky thing that hasn't been mentioned thus far... ever dreamed something and had it come true? A few years ago I got into writing my dreams down and there were a couple of scary instances when things I had dreamed actually happened a few days later maybe not in exactly the same context as the dream but similar enough to send chills down my spine and end my dream writing.

yeah i've had dreams before where my hair was very blonde, odd because it's actually a brown. It was the same dream in which i dreamed of living in weathered wood paneled house with a board walk down to a lake,3 months later i went to Oxford Conneticut,a place i've never been ever before, and saw the house beside a beautiful harbor!! it was really cool!!
