The Ballad Of The Turtle And Balladeer

One day a turtle came to town,
Cold pistol spent and glory bound.
A desert tortoise many years,
He came in parched and wanted beer.

The cowboys, they all stood around
And watched him slowly go the ground.
They thought it odd, a turtle here?
Let's send for marshall Balladeer.

The marshall stood firm on his mound,
With pistol oiled and lasso wound.
His draw was held in high revere.
A life's work filled his bandolier.

The turtle? Well he's still inbound
And building  drama  in the town,
One PIPer cried,There's naught to fear,
For we have mighty Balladeer!

Much later:Turtle thought he'd found
A place where his dry quest could drowned,
But from the rumblings in the rear
He heard the marshall would appear.

As Turtle slowly turned around,
He answered marshall's great propounds
There is no fancy quick-draw here,
I'm just a turtle Balladeer.

Well, I thought it was great and it spurred me on to pen a response...

The day was just a normal day, not too much going on.
The dogs hid from the harshness of the brutal midday sun.
The folks were staying in their houses, refuge from the heat,
All except for Chester, who came running down the street.

"Hey, marshall! We got problems!" He was almost out of breath.
"Some stranger's just come into town that has folks scared to death!"
"Ain't no doubt he's a hard-shell type although he moves real slow."
"Some trouble might be brewin' and we thought that you should know."

Another one, I sighed inside, as I walked out the door.
Another one to come for me, just like the ones before.
I'd have to send him on his way like I did all the rest.
The fastest pun alive would show him who was really best.

I remembered that dog Toerag thinking he could take me down
Before I spanked his bottom as I ran him out of town.
Then LongJohn tried to do his best to make short work of me.
Now rumor has it that his ship was lost somewhere at sea.

Some other minor players did their best to take a shot
But  shallow graves on Boot Hill were the only things they got.
They didn't get the message that was painfully made clear
That no one beat the marshall that was known as Balladeer.

I walked into the bar. The stranger had his back to me.
His pistol belt was low-slung, just the way it ought to be.
This hombre knew the trade for sure and I had best take care
To make sure, when the smoke cleared, it would be me standing there.

The bar was deathly quiet as he turned to look my way.
My eyes were on his hands for hints when he would make his play
But one hand held a beer. I saw the other hand extend
In friendship as he smiled and said, "My name is Turtle, friend."

I've made a living judging men in seconds on the spot
And it has made the difference 'tween the ones I liked or fought.
This man and I would be good friends. That fact rang loud and clear.
I took his hand in friendship and said, "Pal, let's have a beer."

So that was how the whole thing started many years ago.
The town is calm and peaceful 'cause the crooks have come to know
That two men will persue them if they start some trouble here...
The deputy known as Turtle and the marshall Balladeer.
