She jumped too high for the skirt that she wore, Her pleats fluttering up in the air, With her mother standing out side the front door, Waving her hands high in utter despair, Come down off of there!, she cried to her girl, Get down off of that old trampoline, You are a young lady in pigtails and curls, Not something the boys will brag that they've seen, Come put on some shorts then go out to play, Jump up real high and do your back flip, But those boys in the yard are not going to say, That they've seen up my young ladies red slip. |

Carny, you brought us a poem in simplicity like Tom does in vagueness, I like both kinds, in fact I like all kinds. of poetry. Your poem is Americana with Appalachia written all over it and this is the www so don’t expect to/too much. Why do I say it has Appalachia written all over it, most other places in the world the trampoline would be in the back yard. Like Tom said it is a interesting poem and I hope you get some comments on it. ~ How do you tell a rich Georgia family from a poor one, the rich family will have two cars in the front yard jacked up on cinder blocks ~ I better shut up before I get accused of being opinionated . |

Pleated skirt with red slip? Pigtails and curls? The image is hard for me to see. Oh, and it should be 'lady's red slip'. I like a lot of what you're doing here, I particularly like the way the mother seems more concerned with propriety and possession rather than the daughter herself. It seems like there's more going on than meets the eye, but I'll have to wait and see it somebody can show me how the image works. |

“The image is hard for me to see.” Brad, before this gets assigned to the what happen pile , let me see if I can help your image : “ Pleated skirt with red slip?" Are seen in some parts of the world , but may not be as recognizable as a bridge of bird wings. “ Pigtails and curls?” but this should be recognizable, as it is a very popular hairdo for . little girls. Why did I say that this poem was interesting? Then the "sophisticated" mother came in. Come down off of there!, she cried to her girl, Get down off of that old trampoline, You are a young lady in pigtails and curls, Not something the boys will brag that they've seen, The mother was imposing the idea of boy to this girl. Come put on some shorts then go out to play, Jump up real high and do your back flip, But those boys in the yard are not going to say, That they've seen up my young ladies red slip. However, the hand can pour motor oil into milk and the milk will be tainted. Chop’s first law of purity : “ Things that are pure will remain pure and things that are tainted will remain tainted." |

I still don't get the significance of 'red slip'? The image strikes me as archaic -- something from a hundred years ago. Maybe things haven't changed as much as I think that have. Oh, Chop, I have a daughter, but in a similar situation, she would be wearing traditional Korean dress (hanbok), not a Western pleated skirt. |

Your little girl would wears a ( hanbok) My little girl, if I had one, would wear jeans and no boy better look at her until she was thirty-seven years old. Brad, believe me red slips are real popular in Kentucky for little girls. I believe Shirley Temple wore one in one of her movies. But hey, that would be just about a hundred years ago. Darn I getting old. |
