I do like this old poem, despite its theatrical metaphysical personality. I've just revised it slightly to make it a better read.  The number of lines per verse meant something once but I can't for the life of me remember what.

The Book of Numbers

Why do islands come in threes and divinities
Confer in triplicate. What triameter,
Revealed the original word and in what dialect
Was it first heard in human time?

Why do rivers fed from mountains in brittle cold
And water-melt, (begun their long meandering song,
When aboriginal we swam in them)?
Why build our cities from their slime,
Sucked from the breast of time?

Spun of gold things, and all the stones of light
And durable objects imaginable,
Will one future day announce our busy lives.
And we’ll too be drawn, in the book of numbers.
So may as well shake the cup and let the dice
By calculation, reckon our time on earth.

Wandering spirits in unimaginable time
This darkness is out there to gaze at.
Hominid, what you see is what you get.

hmmm. Working on a sub-atomic level, it's all unpredictable, until you want it?

I get "three's the magic number. No more, no less." De La Soul, fantastico...and, "into the dazzling void." Metaphysical indeed. Gold-Spinner.
I can't remember what culture first invented the written word (was it the Sumerians? Then the Phoneticians? I'm getting Babylonians from google, I have a faint recollection of Pythagoras being involved-he was a student of the Egyptians, Chaldeaens, and Bhramians (sp?), as well as the Babylonians...the guy travelled...and his culture took his learned wisdom as their own. Don't they all?), but I'm sure it was something to do with counting large numbers of livestock and crops, time/seasons, losses  and gains.

I'm getting that vibe from your poem, anyway..."will one future day announce our busy lives".

Words were revered as powerful energy, just like the river's "meandering song." Perhaps this is to remind those who have forgotten?

I'm hoping triameter is a neologism!
Dialect is a pun on dialectic which is crudely threefold in Feuerbach.
Long meandering song evokes the song lines of the dream time.
spun of gold...... etc. imagines future archaeologists who would think "What the hell??"
Finally I've always wondered what early humans thought they were seeing when they stared into the night sky. WHAT DID THEY THINK THEY WERE SEEING???????????????????????????????????? I mean before the priests cornered the market..

haha. A newly formed word coined by a psychotic (triameter from trimeter?). Ties in with your 'dreamery.' ha ha again. Good question. Power?

I've yet to read Feuerbach's stuff, but I gather he thought religion to be our conciousness of the infinite, therefore 'thought' by man? The 'tri' would be the Holy Trinity? Building blocks indeed.  Newly formed...last time I said that, I was called a Pantheist.

Et al isms and skisms with this material!

Hey Hey Beau

Love this

Why do islands come in threes and divinities
Confer in triplicate. What triameter,
Revealed the original word and in what dialect
Was it first heard in human time?

What is human time....great.

Would have like to see a continuation of the numbers idea. Seemed to loose focus. Can you begin to streamline you ideas so that one can see from the begining to end...wobbles in the middle I think.
