Were I a man of 2005
I'd wear an amazing parasol hat
with propellers fluming air from that

With this I would fly in 2005
to visit the Emir of New Calcutta;
landing a palace, not a mud gutter

And in that year of 2005
I would greet Great Grandfather,
for he still is alive; for he still is me
when mortal oblivion is banished for good

Death is dead, so we of the future
move on and up and over all pasts
in our parasol hats; our aerial rafts

Would I were living, alive
in two aught aught and five

"would I were king" and "would I were a bird"
are other examples of "would" to mean "'I wish,  but I know I cannot ever be'..."
Resignation.  The lad is long gone
He knew he would be mortal after all.
