ha ha.. yes, but of course, you don't have an ancient Roman mind.

Olive oil was called only "sweet oil" until one century ago.  Never called "olive oil".  Why "sweet oil"?  I don't know, but that it was the only vegetable oil in wide useage.  Pleasing flavor.  It did not turn racid as would animal fats in that era of not much refrigeration.  The oil lasted well, remaining "sweet" as opposed to going off or rancid.

-Bath:  Bath, England.  Site of the best preserved ancient Roman bath.

-Thermal:  the waters at Bath come from thermal springs.  Natural heat.

-Heat: body heat

-Oiled men (women, too, but they were sequestered in their own bathing chambers).  "Oiled" because there was no soap yet.  Olive oil emulsifies body soil.  Is good for the skin

-Scraping silent:  After a hot soak and rubbing down with oil oil the flesh was scraped with a dull knife.  The bathers or their attendants did this work communally.  I don't suppose there was much talk going on.  At any rate, we today cannot hear their voices remarking about...what?   Business?  Home? Government intrigues and scandal? Extramarital affairs?  Time has erased the recordings.. this scraping of oiled skin must be dead silent.

The poem is more didactic than formal poetry.  So too, are ancient sites of former ways of life.

OH--- Olive oil was essential to then-modern Roman life.  It was the oil in the lamps; the source of the only light after dark.  It was the cleanser for skin.  It was a staple food: drinkable, even; or just dip your bread into "sweet oil".  No doubt olive oil lubricated society in many ways both literal and figurative.

Imagine the dirty, grimy world it was then.  Communal bathing was the most important social activity for those highly civilized ancients.

Olive oil is good for us even today.  There should be more poems about olive oil?  Got one to hand over, anyone?

I do. Ha, but it won't be serious, not the second time I write about the olive.

oye!

LOL, and Popeye loved Olive Oyl! Oyvay!
You absolutely MUST write another oily piece, maybe this is the tip of an oil iceberg?
I have seen some ancient Roman baths, understand about the scrapings. Ah, the benes of oil are endless!
But then I am one who daily climbed olive trees as a child, and can vouch for the nasty side of raw olives. PHLLBT! or however one might write that sound. LOL.
I don't like green olives, only the shiny pearly black ones. Not that anyone has asked, though.

hah

Soo.. more olive. and you -don't like the green ones?---

I have a poem to counter -that- (grin) and because it's a true-junk poem I'll place it right here, instead of junking up the main list further.

I little humor goes far in Critical Commentary- esp. considering how quiet this neglected board used to be.  We lube seriousness with mutual squeezes. OK!

I yam whut I yam. Kuhkuhkuhkuhkuh!

-refrigerate after opening-

Olive green you are my fruit.
Oily essence of female taste
I pluck you up by my strong grip
and bite you hard
I get your nut
round that heart
that hard inside
sweet flesh surrounds
the good in me

Olive, olive
I am yours.  And you
unjarred calming
stomach me
the man who admits
much lick for you
my salty olive
never drab

BTW, thanks for your replies to my 'submissions' in Open. I still don't like any version of the word 'submit'
