BIRTHRIGHT

It's a shame, really, that you never knew the man,
Because he helped give you life.
I question where you would be today,
   Without Dizzy Gillespie's trumpet.

Oh, the man could play.

The man produced more harmonious madness
   Than Shelley ever could.
      He was the Skylark
         Of Birdland.

When I hear him hit and carry
   A long, solid high note,
      I think of you.
Those tones,
Those mellow, mellow tones that seemed to
Flow out of the bell of that horn
         Bear more likeness to you
            Than any kin ever will.
Sometimes they are strong and willful.
Other times they are soft and alluring.
Sometimes they are high, quick and wild.
Other times they are low, slow, and mild.

You must have Jazz in your veins.

It's a shame, really, that you never knew the man,
And it's a shame he never met you.

Cause he'd have known you at a glance.

When one is kin to a trumpet,
It's impossible to hide the shine.
