The cannon fires in a ritual repeated daily, tradition of decades marking a point in a day a reference point to a coming meal for others an end or beginning of a shift but today it’s different today under curious eyes a unit as one hits the deck not for calisthenics two dozen drop as one days waiting for a long flight the lay over in Germany another long flight the bus ride hasn’t dulled the edge no band to greet them only this daily blast no one told them of hitting the dirt as one the sound routed from ear to muscle bypassing the brain evaluation takes too long now wiping unnecessary dust off uniforms welcome home |
