Sonnet on Separation

The years were many – spent with you.
The more I spent, the less I knew,
Though one thing was abundantly clear
My love for you was like a mirror

And every time I’d see your face
My heart would quicken in such haste
To pound with excitement at the sight
Of my soul reflected in that light.

You had me beat in many ways
We were not clones within that gaze.
My respect for you was ever growing
Even as your heart was slowing.

You made it there before I could
This matters not, nor ever should.

Sight is an always awful beginning
