Children’s Verse

Daddy let me use plastics for play-time!
Tonka trucks stuck
With Play-Doh in the tire well
But I can make them fly
With just a twist of my wrist.
Wow! How things go so quickly
-- Toys, I mean.
Time is different.
It takes 24 months to make one Christmas
And I have a lot to go.

Daddy let me use plastics for play-time.
Maybe I can use wood.
Brother graduated; maybe I should!
I’ve seen the tool shed,
Surrounded in metal sheets,
A retreat for grown-up arts
And crafts to be explored.
Electric sanders, circular saws,
Lumber and steel.
I think I’ll use the hammer and nail.

I found tools for play-time!
Thwack! Goes the chime of my labor.
A nail here, some wood there
My art is a hazard of random objects.
I saw Daddy once use core-gated tin
For roof-stuff. I can use it again.
Now I have a house for dolls to live in.

They found my art from play-time!
They’re shouting and throwing their hands.
Flashes and microphone vans
Record my every notion.
They call me genius and
In a flurry of paper motion, my toys
Are taken away – placed in another home.
There’s yelling for more
And I mourn the work of my hands.
I’m in such high demand.
Wood feels rough to me and I’m not old enough
For the sander.
Where did I go wrong?

It’s amazing how things go so quickly.
My toys were never meant for living.
They took them away and asked for more.
I never meant them for living.

Sight is an always awful beginning
