Once she gathered daisy chains, bouquets
of childish giggles, days of barefoot grass
and sprinklers. Far horizons hooked her gaze;
the gate would open, innocence would pass.

The rampant years compressed their pungent rush,
congealed their robust flavor - and their sting.
Her children scattered; now the vapor brush
of distance swirls, though muted echoes cling.

She hugs each photo, every scripted thought,
as tautened threads of longing make her cringe.
Their world of fresh-spun innocence can not
be hers to hold - she'll only touch the fringe.

In bittersweet delight, their visits pass,
a chain of giggles trailing in the grass...

Dedicated to all 'long distance' grandparents!

Lary

quite a write. I enjoyed every word and how it mingled with the next one.

I like the way you took me through time in just a few words. I envisioned an entire lifetime. It's a joy to see all children play the same. But, as a grandparent, I can only capture a few of these moments.
Thanks.

Very well said, Lary.
I too think the family has lost that "daisy chain" you speak of, everything seems to be long distance nowadays.
Growing up, my grandparents were responsible for much of my upbringing, and for instilling what I consider the best of my traits. At one time, we had four generations living together in our small town. Today the town is decayed, much as our society. Houses that once had families are empty, the old timers gone, the newcomers "different", to say the least.
"I wish they could see what I see."
Thanks. Billy
