My granddaughter asked in her own charming way,
Do you want to go with us?  We're antiquing today.
So I went along, and I looked at the stuff,
Of which long ago, I had had quite enough.

For I'm from the era, when one had to make do.
Take good care of the old, there's no money for new.
Oh, even back then, there were second-hand stores.
I'd be too embarrassed to go through their doors.

My friends would have tittered, and even the clerk,
Would have served me, but with a superior smirk.
For only stark poor, would be willing to pay,
A few cents for the things we were throwing away.

And when at last I had money to spend,
Only the new would have done me back then.
I wanted to show my new station in life,
And the worth of the man, who had made me his wife.

And so as they shopped and chattered away,
My mind wandered back to that far away day.
I laughed as they oohed over somebody's hat.
Why in the world would they ever want that?

I had to wear cousin's hand me down clothes.
It made me ashamed right down to my toes.
But now these sweet little darlings of mine,
Were acting as if all these old things were fine.

It tickled me so, and filled me with mirth,
That these out-dated things had attained such a worth.
If I  had only kept all that I threw away,
I could be a very rich woman today.

Of course I would be nearly buried in junk.
Out of my little house it would take quite a hunk.
But all my grandddaughters would be walking on air,
For the fun they would have, just looking through there.

I like this one very much, Joyce. You created a very nice nostalgic flavor here. Ah, yes, if we had only known then and saved all that "junk"..

Very good Joyce.  I'm an old flea market/yard sale junkie myself.  Liked this one.*S*

Dear Joyce:  Well written and such fun to read!  The first time a daughter-in-law asked me to go to a garage sale, I almost said "no".  Now I'm as hooked as she is!

delightful. it's true. pack rats always seem to have those old things everyone wants and pay big bucks for. but, who wants to live like a rat?...

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Very cute poem, one that many of us can relate to, now we don't even have to get in the car to do it, we have online auctions.
