This desert life is all I know.
I sometimes think of travel, though,
Beyond the boundaries of this land
Of burning sun and shifting sand.
I know I would seem out of place
In shrouding robes, with hennaed face
And I would miss these dunes I roam.
I'm destined to remain at home.

In the oasis where we stay
Part of the year, I sometimes may
See addax grazing near the trees.
One of Sahara's mysteries!
For who would think gazelles could dwell
On such harsh ground and do so well.
They can survive without a drink
For an eternity I think!

The camels are so much a part
Of how we live, within my heart
There is a place reserved, for they,
Are vital to our nomad way
And though we wander, there's a plan
That brings us back where we began.
We live as Tuaregs did before.
May Allah grant us eons more!

It is exciting how you can transfer yourself into an entirely different woman.  Your poems are wonderful. Joyce

Dear Joyce:  Thank you for the nice compliments!  I love writing from someone else's perspective.  As you probably surmise, I just read a book on the Tuareg people.
