Why is the sky so large out here
and when I watch clouds disappear,
where the horizon meets the grass,
it takes so long for them to pass.
It's not like living anywhere
i've ever been.  Out here you share
the world of nature, live close to
the earth itself, in all you do.
No sound of city, cars or planes,
although we sometimes do hear trains,
but they provide a useful part
to living in the prairie's heart.
They bring supplies and tansport grain,
then leave us all alone again.

The birds have learned to make their nest
upon the prairie's fertile breast.
Well hidden in the tangled mass
of different kinds of sturdy grass.
My horse and I are like a ship,
that follows every rise and dip
across this wide and trackless plain.
We listen to the wild refrain
that travels in prevailing ways,
sung by the wind, that sweeps and sways
each blade that makes this boundless sea,
stretching far away from me.
In day or night, I'm satisfied,
within this heartland, to abide!

Betty Lou - I was afraid of this when I moved to Alberta...luckily I still have trees around my home....and I'm in a town....
But how eloquently you describe the prairie atmosphere - and portray your love for all that nature space...
I fear, though, that I'd feel somewhat lost!
This is just marvellous!

I love this.  We have mountains which are beautiful, but I do miss the sweep of the prairie and the isolation.  Today we had steady streams of traffic by our house because of the tulip tour. Good work  Joyce

Lary:  Thanks for commenting.  I think I told you I was born and raised in Alberta? I have been in the prairie part of it and also in the far north, plus lived in Edmonton for about 9 years. I enjoyed it all.

Joyce: Thanks for reading and commenting. I love the prairie country, although I've never lived in it for any great length of time.  It is a special place to be and has a feeling like no other country does. I'm sure you have had hordes of people all week-end with the tulip festival on.  Guess that continues for awhile too, doesn't it?

I especially love these lines:

The birds have learned to make their nest
upon the prairie's fertile breast.
Well hidden in the tangled mass
of different kinds of sturdy grass.
My horse and I are like a ship,
that follows every rise and dip
across this wide and trackless plain.

These lines flow so smoothly and give such a presence of being there. I love your writing.
