He stands above his little pack.
The Arctic wind is at his back.
He looks out on the tundra plain
to search for food; sometimes in vain.
He often hunts both hard and late,
to find enough to feed his mate,
where in her nursery den she stays,
to tend her cubs for thirty days.

Although it's May, it's very cold
and hunger makes the leader bold,
so with his pack, he lopes along.
They chorus out a hunting song
and then fall silent so their prey
Won't hear them call and run away.
The lemmings dash in mindless fear
whenever hunting wolves appear.

A caribou who lags behind
the other animals, will find
he's suddenly surrounded by
a pack that's cunning, swift and sly
and so he dies that they might live
and sustenance to others give.
The alpha male and every heir
is safe, as long as man's not there.

I like this, the last line is so true. Nature may seem harsh sometimes, but there is a balance. That is until man enters the picture and takes inordinately.

I like this Betty.  I know the wolf has been much maligned, that he hunts only to feed the pack. Good thoughtful poem. Joyce

Betty Lou,
You've managed to put such empathy in this...and some great artistic impressions!
The picture is crystal clear - and your conclusion is a wonderful comment on nature and humans....
So enjoyed this!

Great job on this!
I really enjoyed what this whole poem was about. very well done.

I was born myself, raised myself, and will continue to be myself. The world will just have to adjust.

I'm in love with my shadow
I admire it daily

Very interesting read, i like to read about nature and you have written this so well, it should be published if you haven't had it published already.

What a wondrous poetic tale you've woven here of nature and her ways of provision! Beautiful!  Ellie

Dear Songbird:  No I haven't published this anywhere, but here.  I most likely will in the near future. There is a publisher who usues many of my wildlife poems.  Thanks.
