Beneath a matted, tangled skein
of jungle plants, fed by the rain,
there lies a city made of stone
and yet today, no one has known
it's pyramids and central square.
Nor all the treasures waiting there.
The golden gods with emerald eyes.
The ornaments, each one a prize.
Murals depicting life back when
this place was once alive with men
and families who tended to
their daily chores, as all folks do.
No one has seen the rituals they
attended on each special day.

What happened to the people here?
How could a whole race disappear?
They left behind their history.
I wonder, will it ever be
discovered and exposed to view?
Sometimes, there surfaces a clue
of where it lies but until now,
nobody has come up with how
to tame this jungle, so they may
reveal it to the light of day.
I almost hear the flute and drum
and see triumphant warriors come,
all driving captives on before,
they've plundered from some pagan war.

There must have been a kinder side.
There is no culture can abide
without the children meant to be
a bridge to their eternity.

Beautiful poem, Betty.  Where do you get all of your inspirations?  Joyce

Nicely done and a vivid picture.  I could visualized the scenes.

Dear Joyce:  Thank you for your comments.  I read a couple of hours every night, about "something".  A lot of my inspiration comes from that.

This is very well-written, as yours seem to be most of the time. I like your conclusion, but then again, they didn't survive, did they?

To love another person is to see the face of God.

well constructed and very interesting. one of life's mysteries. I like this a lot.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

kcsgrandma:  No, they didn't survive, but they did leave some fascinating ruins, if we can find them all!

Wow, I can't believe I was just about to leave without reading this.. well, I REALLY have to go now..
Loved "Lost in Yucatan".. it's kinda sad.. gives almost a hollow feeling, thinking of all those people.. well, but this is beautiful

Sorry I missed this earlier somehow, Betty Lou. (Been practicing what I was preaching about in, "Boxes".)
Very good reading.
The "People of the Sun" have always fascinated me too. But then history has been my love for too long also. (ergo, the new quote)

"The only thing new in the world, is the history we don't know."
Harry S. Truman
