Gracefully drooping plant.
(Carefully nurtured for at least four years.)
Now asymmetrical; “Shave and a hair-cut, didn’t cost two bits.”
Stately house tree,
bowed down, with a tawny ornamental fuzz ball, suspended
by ten steel claws.
“There’s a cat in our house!”

Milk mustached, innocent face.
(What!—Who me?)
Suspicious noises in the kitchen;
rattle, rustle in the trash can.
Wild manic ricochet off the walls, behind the couch,
over the bed, with a quick bounce on the sleeping human trampoline.
Shattered knickknacks! Hall-dancing at midnight!
“There’s a cat in our house!”

Slimy hair balls, almost tastefully hidden.
Floating, drifting mounds of hair—that tenaciously adhere.
Odorous, fish breath, “Meow,” in your face.
(Don’t forget the litter box.)
Fanged, gentle teeth; love bites; steel trap claws.
Watchful glowing eyes; silently assesses all he sees,
from high perch—king of his domain.
“There’s a cat in our house!"

Aloof, mystical being
who allows himself to be gently caressed.
Perpetual purring machine,
a languid stretch—drowsy eyes.
Curled up in a lap.
(Safe Haven)
Gently asleep—pure contentment,
at peace.
“We are in a cat’s house!”

There have been a few cats who allowed me to live in their houses. You have it well-described here. This especially made me think of a quarter-Siamese cat we got as a wedding present (really!!), big claws, and used to run through the hall of our trailer sounding like a herd of elephants. Thanks for that memory.

Ah, you have done it again! Beautiful description of how it is to live in their house! I have two cats, with distinctly different personalities..One afectionate, one not, one as graceful as a ballet dancer, the other, knocks over everything!

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

I love this.  I am the pet of two cats.  One lives in the house with me. the other stalks the premises.  You drew a true picture of what it is like to be adopted by a cat.

This is so familiar and well done too.  We have three cats.  A Siamese who is wild as a March hare, but so loving when the mood strikes him.  An old cat who is somewhere between 21 and 24 but still fairly active and a wild cat that is semi-tamed and will only come in the house if my husband invites her in.  She doesn't have anything to do with me or our son. What independent creatures they are!

Cats, what fey creatures they are.  I wrote this about 4 ½ years ago.  First cat I had in almost 20 years; seems the oldest daughter was very allergic to them.  But when she moved out, her sister was allowed to have a cat, which became my cat.  You know I do miss him, had to give him up when I moved last fall.  *sigh

I enjoyed reading all your lovely comments, thanks.
