The threshing crew had eaten.
The dishes put away.
My aunt and mother's chores were done
Until another day.
The moon outside was brilliant.
It beckoned them out there.
My uncle hollered at them:
"Be careful of the bear."
"What bear is that?" my aunt replied.
She gave my mom a wink.
"The bear I saw last evening.
He's after pigs I think.
His footprints are gigantic
And he trampled down some grain,
So keep your eyes wide open,
If you wander down the lane."
The women closed the door and laughed.
They thought he was a tease.
The smell of smoke and wheat was borne
Upon the autumn breeze.
The walk was long and lovely
And as they turned around,
They heard a rustle in the brush.
A sort of huffing sound.
My mother whispered to my aunt
"It's just one of the boys.
They think that they will scare us,
By making "bearish" noise."
They talked a mile a minute
And laughed aloud to show
They weren't the slightest frightened.
The noise continued though.
It followed them into the yard,
But nothing could they see.
They were convinced it was the guys,
Up to tomfoolery!
They grinned as they went in the door,
But those grins faded when
They saw a card game going on
And counted all the men!

You tell a good story here, and in excellent form, too. It made me think of a few encounters with critters we've had over the years. Did they ever admit it to the men?

Very good story, Betty Lou.

There are some of these family tales in all our trees, I think.
Thanks.

I love this Betty.  Having four older brothers, I was never quite sure whether what they were telling me was  true or a big tease.  So I know how these two felt.  Joyce

QQPs, very scary after the fact.

Nicely done story that I really enjoy.  This would break into stanzes quite nicely, which would control the flow of the read, building the suspense.  Have you consider that?

What a terrific yarn you weave, i love it...had me on tender hooks...

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

kcsgrandma:  Yes the women did admit to the men that they thought one of them was following them.  The next morning, they found the bear tracks. Thanks for commenting.
