Out in the berry patch displayed,
are silly scarecrows that I made,
with curly wigs and colored clothes
and each one in a different pose.
They are the size of you or me
and sometimes when I chance to see
a glimpse of them, when working near,
I think there is a stranger here!
Some people passing by will say,
"I saw you in your patch today.
Just standing there.  What did you do?"
It makes me laugh, but catbirds too
think they are real and won't come near
when ripe, red berries do appear.
Before the scarecrows came to be,
the catbirds flocked from every tree,
to swoop in raids and eat and mew.
They only left me just a few
and so my scarecrow family
came to life most vividly.
I gave them names, they seem so real
and there are many times I feel
that they are more than cloth and hair
and they enjoy their life out there!
At corner posts, they stand on guard,
to keep the catbirds from the yard!

They sound like quite a sight. I don't blame you for not wanting to share those berries with the birds. I'm glad you found an effective way to stop them.

Hi Marilyn:  Thanks for commenting.  The scarecrows are fun to have around.  I re-dress and re-wig them every year and the neighbors come to see what they are wearing this season.  Maybe they're really checking to see how the berry patch is doing!  They all come and pick during the season.

Oh, I love this Betty. Nothing frightens starlings and robins.  I could sit and wave my arms and they would still get my cherries.  Love,  Joyce

Thanks Joyce.  I am about to give up on the strawberry patch, because of the robins. We have tried everything and nothing stops them!
They don't pay attention to scarecrows either.

Nicely done here. I'm honestly thinkin you did great.
