(Disclaimer: I'm not claiming any expertise in this field, LOL)

The 'Bite-Your-Tongue' Theory

Which of the wisdoms should we be upholding -
psychiatrists' warnings or grandmother's scolding?
When is it better to openly vent,
when should we swallow our pointed intent?

We hobble through life - half in silence, half speaking,
with self-imposed righteousness blatantly peeking.
We ponder effects while debating the cause,
count slowly to ten for a breathable pause.

When turmoil erupts, we succumb to the dread:
'Did I behave right?  Was it something I said?'
Bewildered and bothered, the stress of deciding
is often much worse than opinions we're hiding.

If truth was a habit instead of a threat,
the 'bite-your-tongue' theory we'd surely forget,
except on occasions we know in our heart
when pain could be caused by the words we impart.

A very valid point. Why should we not say whats on our minds unless it will hurt someone. I liked it.

Lovely poem...I had to take my foot out of my mouth to type this! LOL! The truth is always the best, with diplomacy, of course, and much love.

Melton - Thank you - I'm glad it makes a point, although I'm not sure if it's the correct one, hmm-mmm...

Keith - Actually I clarified the last stanza after your comment, because I wanted to emphasize it more. I just wish we could speak openly and honestly....but we're expected to 'follow protocol', etc. ...what a pain!
Thanks!

Krawdad - I really like that quote - thanks so much for your response!

Hi JB - I know, it's the pits. But wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to worry about it?!

Ellie, that's so cute! I can't imagine you ever having to do that - you're such an elegant lady!

Sol, you're hilarious - "I was a quiet kid"....I know your parents' advice was wise....sure helps you get along in the world better!

Thanks, DD!

Hi Wynter - so glad you like it. I guess the main problem with this theory is that it only works if everyone subscribes to it, LOL!

Moon Dust - Thanks!

I appreciate your responses, thanks!

Laryalee,
This was a very nice read. Quite enjoyable and I think you wrote it very well.  I was expecting a different ending tho so was a bit surprised by this one.  Glad I stopped in - the title grab my by the throat and yanked me in here.  Panne

This is a good one, Laryalee.
The thoughts you present here, are ones I deal with daily, sometimes hourly.
I think I should probably keep my mouth shut most of the time, and find myself apologizing, (as a true gentleman should), moreoften for something I merely "thought" I said to someone.
I suppose in psychiatric circles this is known as "paranoia", but when one has known the horror and reality of nearly unbearable "pain", one tries to in turn, cause as little of the same as possible.
Yet opinions are of themselves, creators of controversy, and being an opinionated person, I usually end up causing my fair share of it.
I guess what I'm saying is you are not alone, it is I believe, one of the foremost attributes that define our "human-ness", which is the capacity to be compassionate for compassion's sake.
Thanks for the read.

Hi Panne!
I've been so busy, so tied up with things - I had forgotten about this one....Nice to meet you, so glad you liked it!

Joyce - I love your wise comments!  You know you have the beginnings of a thought-provoking poem right there!

Andrew - Thank you! I just wanted to stimulate thought, and am pleased when it works!

Coyote - It does seem a bit sad, that we can't relax...I wonder if it  all boils down to simple insecurity...but then arrogant people can be so obnoxious!
Just life, I guess....thanks for dropping in!

This is so well written and treats a difficult subject with respect.  I guess we've all had moments when we did speak our minds and later wished we hadn't.

Lary,
Thanks for the reply.

Sorry I'm so arrogant & obnoxious.

How's that for insecurity?

Hi Betty Lou - Thanks!  It's kind of nice to be able to just admit we're human, though!

coyote - hee hee! Golly, maybe you could start counting your apologies, then gather them up, package them and sell them to those who really need them....
(Now what on earth brought that on?....Hey, it could work!)

This may be a little off the point, but the line "If truth were a habbit instead of a threat" really struck me. It brought to me the feeling of being honest (about perhaps more than an opinion) and simultaneously handing over a weapon.

I really like the way this was presented. I think maybe I should keep my mouth shut more often as well if I feel like I may hurt someone. I do shoot my mouth off alot. This is a stop-and-think-before-you-act message. Very well written.

An excellent message showing us both sides of the issue, well written with sensitivity and respect in a classical style. You truly are a great poet!   Into my library this goes~

Take care,
