the Huntress
The meadow grass is stirrup high
bends, sways, waves with breeze.
Her palomino paint forges ahead
like tall ship gliding on mirrored sea.

Soft buckskin covered with bead
intricate patterns of flower and deer.
Her bow and quiver ready on shoulder
eyes hunting, protecting; sharp and clear.

Sunshine laying like favorite blanket
drenching hair to a golden hue.
Overhead her hawk soars, searching
his cry piercing the crystal blue.

She stops cautiously, ever gently
dismounting at remembered creek.
A pat of hand, a kind word
paint and maiden pause for drink.

Comfort abruptly interrupted
hawk cries warning, high and sharp.
Her weapon instantly in hand, ready
hunters blood surging in her heart.

Mount kneels with signaled command
her instincts roused, deadly aware.
Her shot true as hundreds before
when from hiding, charges the bear.

Hours of toil at creeks bloody shore
no scrap is wasted, thanks to ancient skill.
Their burden heavy, as to start they ride
winter will be warmer, thanks to her kill.

She calls praise to her sentry
as he wings to earth so far below.
Her day ending, her tribe provided
riding homeward as the sun sets low.

What a wonderful portrayal! And I just love that it's about the 'Huntress' ....instead of the more common hunter on his horse!
A whole story, and it just flows with rhythm and eloquent imagery...
love it!

Indeed this is a fine story, and held my attention from beginning to end. I, too, am impressed that you chose to make your protagonist a huntress rather than a hunter, a very nice twist.

Beautifully written saga of an indian huntress, I was captured and taken into the vivid picture you painted.

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

thank you each for the comments!
just seemed natural as this one
tore it's way onto paper that
the lead be female...
Made some cosmetic changes to
improve the continuity,
although at risk for meddling
according to Wendy Woo...

thanks again and we love ya!

This is excellent!!! I love the fact that 'tis a huntress as well. Very impressed with the imagery.

How can you save me?
When the dark comes right in and takes me,
from my front walk and into bed,
where it kisses my face and eats my head. Shivaree
