DIGGING UP DIRT
Virginia Salter

digging up dirt
takin’ out grass
and weeds that grow
tillin’ it well
makin’ weed free
my rich and sandy soil

diggin’ it deep
siftin’ it through
removin’ undesirables
so it’ll be true

sinkin’ my hands into
the cool earth
to search and destroy
before unwanted gives birth

purgin’ all that’s less than the dream that I hold
yet then I realize that nothin’ would grow
for an increment of time
the length I do not know

I have learned
it just can’t be pure dream,
I’ve gotta take
the curd with the cream

yet be diligent, alert,
and yes a bit wary
watchin’ for what could come
and overtake the beauty

not acquiesce
nor be apathetic,
so what’s allowed in my realm
is truly copacetic

but plants is plants
and soil is soil

Nice to see you in the Pub. What a nice springy poem! You clearly love working with the earth. Enjoyed reading this.

To love another person is to see the face of God.

Being a keen gardener, I can relate to this...however a lot of hard toil is needed to keep our gardens looking nice. But the reward is one of God's most beautiful creations. Very true and well thought out.

Thank you all! I have to tell you I love preparing the soil, planting the plants or the seeds and I love the harvest. What I hate is the endless weeding. This year, more than any other, I have a lot of weeding to do before I can prepare the soil. The crocuses are croaking, the hyacinths are choking, both in the masses of grasses clinging to the earth.

So I write poetry from a warm house in a comfortable chair.
