I wrote this for my friend, Toni, who is from this lovely place. She gave me photos and requested a poem.

I am mountain and valley,
I am ancient of years,
and as young as springtime.
My ruins of ancient days,
where trodden stony stairs
of those long gone have tred.
Ruins that gaze from on high,
to verdent valley, green below.
My children come home to me,
from far across the sea,
to be enfolded in family arms
and renew their heritage here.
I am a precious ancient gem
in the crown of Italy.
A fountain flows with life
to honor those who died.
Come walk these olden paths,
and gaze on high of ruins old.
Feast on old world recipes.
Be filled with love of family.
Rest at evening sun that sets,
be young again at dawn.
For I, Gessopalena, am beauty beyond compare.
The Queen of Italy!

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Oh, Ellie..this is grand. so elegant, so "Old world" in it's flavor. you have wrought a precious gem here..

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Dear Ellie,
You have really shown some amazing depth in your writting as you have taken this theme not from personal experience but from pictures and the descriptions by a friend, and have made it so compelling and real to us. I am amazed and delighted. And I am sure your friend will be thrilled with this precious piece--and treasure it for many years to come.

Beautiful, Ellie. I echo those who have got here before me. Not only have you written a lovely description of your friend's home, but you have done it with words that create an atmosphere of an ancient place in the Old World. What a loving and lovely gift for your friend. Brava!
