She used to dance
Bare foot in meadows
In cornfields
On top of hay bales in the barn
She used to topple over
and laugh without effort

She grew up

Into a lovley woman
Her steps
Are now more discreet
Her laughter more concrete
Her job more proffesional
Than her used to be dreams
Of riding an elephant through Africa or
going to broadway with the stage name
Diaka
She slips her bare feet into silk bedroom slippers
slipping off into the night
At 2:00 in the morning
She sits on her porch steps
Remembering the feeling of garden mud
Ooozing through callused toes
Resisting the urge
To plop down next to the ripening tomatoes

She grew up to be a lovely, successful lady
"You've gained so much and come so far," her boss praised the next day.
"Yes" she replied with an exuburant fake smile

An hour later she quit her job

Threw her pumps into a dumpster

Ran nine blocks home

Took the hose out

Watered the garden
In her bare feet
Saw a giant bug

SCREAMED!
and laughed until she toppled over

I'm sure the child within each of us would love to do this......just one more time! Great poem, Joy!

Joy, this is excellent!  And I'm not so successful, but I sure would like to play hooky sometime.

Loved the way how you expressed yourself here Joy, how you tied it together and how this Lady sets herself free.

Joy,

It's great when we can do this, even if only for the weekend.

This is a wonderful poem. I love the way you're writing.

Joy, this is a wonderfully written poem! Sometimes we just need to get out of the rut and taste that freedom again! Ellie

The small-town kid in me loved this imagery.
A reminder that life is more than corporate stress.
Very good poetic form as well, Joy.

i really like this. is our core the child within us?
bare feet, enchanting, reminds me of innocence and childhood...and a certain quietness.. thats why when the weathers nice i sometimes take off my shoes after i get off the bus and walk home barefoot and people look at me funny in the streets but it makes me feel like a child again, all arms and legs. simplicity.
