I scream my name, Mariah!
The beauty of my flight soars beyond your reach.
To stroke with eagle wings against the azure sky,
as I fly. . .to move the clouds around,
unchained from human desires.
You can not understand what you can not hold;
the storm cries of the gale. . .my incandescent voice,
as it echoes all round you in the brilliant daylight.
You can only feel the wind of my name, Mariah!

Why do you cover this glided cage that you lured me into?
To calm me, as I vainly beat my wings against the passion
of my untamed songs, in a endless struggle to be free.
Or perhaps, you can not stand the reflected guilt
that peers back from unblinking eyes,
of the one called,  Mariah!

Wordancer; Powerful and passionate poem of freedom longed for and those who try and take it away. The wind is always free! Love, Ellie

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Sounds like you are re-discovering yourself. Nice independent writing!

Joy, the power of the name mariah, is awesome.

ellie, the wind of the soul can be caged in so many ways and sometimes not known it until it escapes.

marge, thanks...I stunned myself with this one...

Solstice Son, now, to finishing breaking out of the other cage of my own making.  Then I will truly fly with the wind!

kcsgrandma, ah...it is more like a learning of myself with each poem that I write.  I never knew me...really, I been a non-entity to myself all these years.  Now that is a scary thought!

BTW, thought all of you might be interested in the background of this poem.  I was thinking about a friend of mine (another poet) that I had lunch with a while ago.  She is very passionate with her writing and life.  During our conversion she showed me the bars of her cage, a husband who claims that he is not jealous of the time she spends on her writing/friends associated with it.  She mentioned some of the things that she has given up in order to keep the peace.  It felt like she was trying more to convince herself than me that family was more important than her soul.  Yes, in a some ways I can agree…but oh the glimpses of the anguish I saw in this caged eagle’s eyes!

No, her name is not Mariah and neither is mine.  The name Mariah and wind elements of the first stanza comes from the song, “They Call the Wind Mariah”, which came from the movie, “Paint Your Wagon”, 1969.  I still find it amazing, the links my mind makes when drifting in a word daze.  LOL

So, this poem was written with my friend in mind, all the caged eagles out there, and for the cage that I escape from.
