At dusk,
obstinate tangerine rays,
dash away from the sun
like mischievous children,
not yet ready to end their play.
Weaving around white-gray clouds,
streaks of pink and red
dangle in the air,
swirls of vibrant color
in stark contrast
against a fading blue-canvas sky.
Unable to ignore the persistent tug of the daystar,
fiery tails skip one last time
over sandy shores and chase one another,
to the edge of the horizon,
before slipping out of sight
beneath evening’s dark blanket.
The last golden bits of light,
the remains of the day,
lay scattered, like abandoned toys
across the surface of the friendly sea.
With one powerful wave goodbye,
they are tossed high into the heavens,
lonely beacons, glowing
throughout the long night.
The distant flickers,
serve as a reminder,
a cry to the mother-sun,
to rise up in the morning
and reclaim them as her own.

Debbie; Wow! This incredibly beautiful poem was so wondrously descriptive and so alive, that I could visualize it clearly. beautiful!

A friend hears the song in my heart, and sings it to me when my memory fails.

Debbie,
You paint a lovely sunset. I've been to San Diego and I can see it now. Thanks, I needed that. It's very cold where I am.

Debbie....

I can close my eyes and picture it. I've never been to San Diego, But by the sounds it would be beautiful.

Ellie,
Thanks for the great words of support!  I wanted so much to try and describe this sunset in a way that I could share it with others!

Gene,
I'm glad that I could send some warmth in your direction!

Ranea,
Yes, San Diego is beautiful, Palm trees,a warm breeze and playful sunsets on the beach...

Debbie, how sweetly you have written about the mother Sun and her willful children! I was very taken by that comparison. And how lovely, to think of the stars as calling her back to claim them!  Beautifully written!
