dressed in a flashy red bow tie,
the lecturer smiled and droned on,
as if impressed with his pompous words

i was amazed
at how some people
appeared to hang on to his every word,

like eager buds beneath the earth,
waiting patiently for the Spring Mistress
to give them the go-ahead to blossom
(i am being kind
i dont want to say,
like eager puppies waiting for their master
to hand out fleshy bones)

they took copious notes
they sat in grave seriousness,
like recruits on their first day,
geared up for battle

i sighed
it was going to be a long semester ahead

*sigh*

ACK!  Flashbacks of College!  So sorry kaile...I hope the prof becomes less pompous during the course of the semester!  Good Luck!

oh flash backs of school.... I don't envy you. enjoyed the read, and take care, and make sure to take at least a few notes.

I graduated from college in Spring of 97.  I can totally relate to this imagery.  While professors droned, many times I was writing poetry or in some other realm of thought.  I like speakers that can relate grandiose things yet bring them down to earth by their personality.

This poem was very effective.  It actually put me right in the scenery.  I could almost here the pens hitting pieces of paper as the drones of college scurry to take their notes from the professor's grandiloquent speech.

mm, sounds like it's a lesson in learning tolerance and honing your listening skills!

Well, I can see both sides of this.  There certainly are professors who are over-impressed with themselves.  And there are drones (I think I was one of them.) who will do anything to get a good grade.  On the other hand, even though majority opinions are not always right, it might be something to think about if you are the only one in class who thinks it's boring.  In any case, hope it works out for you.

You call that dreadful?? Copying what the lecturer said, and hanging on to his every word isn't dreadful....

It's those who bring tape recorders to the lecture to record his EVERY word, that are scary!!!

Imagine!!! It's not enough to listen to that dreadful boring voice 4 hours a week... They have to record his speech and re-play it and savour each moment, each word, each syllable... EWL!!!!!!!
