One of the Guys

This moming they said I was "one of the guys."
That's all right. Guys do make good friends,
But why can't they see I am not just a pal?
I'm a woman, with all that portends.

For talking and joking and dreaming of dreams,
They find my companionship fine,
But when it comes time to go home at night,
There's not one who wants to be mine.

Of course, there are those who would "love" from afar,
But a long-distance "romance", as such,
Can never fulfill the desires of my heart.
I hunger for real human touch.

So I wish they'd consider that "one of the guys,"
Not being quite just what she seems,
Is longing to share her passionate heart
And just might be the girl of their dreams.

your expression of an ache for real companionship really hit a home run here..it is powerfully done..great read..

Hmmmm...looks like I have the wrong impression from your other poem.  This one really hits home for me as well...too close.  I hope they can remove the blinds from their eyes to find the real you!

Pegasus - Thanks! I guess it's a pretty basic human need, isn't it?  I do like the home run.     Think I could help out the Red Sox?

Wikket - No, not the wrong impression at all.  This was written over a year ago, before I met the person in the other poem.  That's why I'm so thankful for him now!

kcsgrandma,

I've had many many guy friends over the years, but it seems that a lot of them are afraid to take a chance on romantic love with me because I am physically disabled. Great read.

I have many guy friends and often thought the same things. But I've been out with some of those guys too and although its never worked out i'm still friends with them. So I kinda look on being one of the guys as a good thing Nice Work BTW.

Dawn - That is very frustrating.  Sometimes it seems as if there are as many excuses as there are guys. Thanks for commenting.

Maria - That's a good point, and quite true.  Thanks, BTW.

Hi,
I think that while being "one of the guys" isn't what you really want, it's beneficial because when you go on a date, you can make conversation. Us "guys" can talk to guys and not be nervous, not even care, whereas some of my friends can't even look at guys they like.

Dreamer - You make a good point.  And a lot of the time it does feel good to be one of the guys.  Just wish I didn't think that was the only way they saw me, know what I mean?

Brian - I hadn't thought about turning that around, that maybe men feel the same way.     Kind of silly of me, I guess.  Thanks for your comments.

well..while brians being 'one of the girls'....lol...i'm 'one of the guys' myself..most of my friends are male..they tell me things..and they tell me who they like..and what they like..and i know these things..but they dont see me as woman..we may share a bed..but not a pillow..we may hold hands--hearts even..but not the romantic element...i know this yearning for human touch...(remember i wrote 'i feel you'..LOL!) and it often hurts more than they can know....

glad youve finally found your dream and that this is from the attic (see! you DO have an attic!)

Marilyn; This is wonderfully written and I hear your quandry..I enjoy my friendship with the guys because it's nice to have the gender not so important as who I really am inside. Ellie

Gale -      at you and your attic.  The only attic I have is on a computer disk, not at all like my grandmother's.     Yes, it can hurt, and obviously a lot of people identify with the feeling.  And as for the dream, it's great, but "I feel you" still reaches home, too.  hugs

Ellie - Thanks, sweet lady.  Yes, sometimes not having to worry about gender is a good thing.     Just don't want it to be all the time, do we?

being one of the girls, i foten wondered the same thing myself...but sometimes when you are so close to your girlfriends(in my case), it seems almost awkward to want to develop a loving relationship with them..perhaps thats what your guy friends are feeling now..that they know you so well that it feels weird to be attached to you, not because you arent girlfriend material

oops, a double post...to make amends, how about a quick rambling about being

One of the Girls

i do hang out with girls
we share gossip over the phone
we exchange fashion tips
i ask them what makes girls click
and they ask me if their prince charmings are finally noticing them

it seems pointless to defend my boyhood
when i am having as much fun with them as with my guy friends
they are more sentimental sensitive creatures(bless them)
and i rather confide in them than in you

so i tolerate your taunts and jeers
and just hope someday you'll see the light
and quit calling me sissy

that was what happened to me when i was in my teens..these days my guy friends admire me for having better(?) rapport with girls...

Suzanne - Thanks.     I remember when I was a kid wishing sometimes that I could be a boy, because they got to do such interesting stuff.  I do like being a girl very well now.  And it does help to have somebody appreciate the woman in me.

You're absolutely right, Kaile, I missed your comment, so thanks fo the "shameless bump".  That's an interesting theory you have there, but makes it difficult for those of us who are friends with the opposite sex.  I do like your poem, and am certainly glad the other guys see the advantages to seeing girls as people, which is really what you have always done.     Keep it up.  You'll make some girl really happy some day.
