Seeking some deeper introspection
Beyond this superficial examination.
Hoping for a stronger understanding
Of who I am and where it is I've come from.
This life is recorded live,
No editing after the fact
To cover up my mistakes.
This is the only chnace I get,
My one shot at immortality
Staring me in the eyes
As I put pen to paper.
My legacy spreads out on the page,
And I alone control what will be
For those who follow to know me by.

So true, so true. We should be ever mindful of the effect our words and the way we live will speak for us in the here and now and in the future. Very good poem, gofor!

yes, we are known by are words that we write, the pieces of our souls that we lay out for others to see.

This was very nicely done.

[This life is recorded live,
No editing after the fact…
This is the only chance I get.]

Most of us leave no lasting legacy, except in the eyes of our loved ones.
Good thoughts.

Yeah...I'm only twenty, and I'm already worrying about how I'll be remembered when I die...

Only 20, eh?  You do some pretty heavy thinking for only 20.  I'm 50, and have a lot less time to figure out what I'm leaving, but it's good that your starting now.  I would dearly love to have something written by my ancestors, something that reveals what they were like inside and how they viewed life.  In that sense, you are already building a legacy with your writing.  Thought-provoking, as always, gofor.

Yeah...I guess I've always had this overwhelming fear that no one will remember me--for good or bad--after I'm dead.  I guess that's a lot of why I write.  Just want something people can remember and know me by, even if they hate me for it.

Well, kalie, there is hope for folks like us--the way I figure it, even if we only make a difference in one person's life, that's still something.  That's still one person we touched.  And hey--if we can get more than that, all the better.

well said, gofor...

though i have heard those words often and i wonder if we are deluding ourselves at times..i mean, we think such thoughts (like making a difference in one person's life will make our existence worthwhile) becos we are feeling inadequate and dont dare to set down bigger goals...trying to make ourselves feel better when deep down, we know we havent really accomplished anything

i wonder if i am getting my point across..but thanx for the thought-provoking piece nonetheless

I'm just reminded of a story in the Old Testament, where God said He would spare Ninevah (I think it was Ninevah...may be wrong on that) from destruction if there was one good person in the whole city...so if one single good life is important to God, then I'll be content with maybe touching one life.

as poets our words (poems) will be our great legacy, though not all of us will be remembered as great poets in the eyes of history, our words will be remembered by the those whose hearts they have touched. enjoyed the poem and look forward to read the rest of your material destined to be your poetic legacy.

Too true...thank you for your comments.  For me, the poetry generally seems less of a legacy and more of a way to get my thoughts out of my head in some coherant and creative form.

This is a very nicely presented look at life and how we chose to live it, and how we think about the mark that we made and how others will view it.

Wonderful poem...you are a thinker and that is wisdom..my thoughts are...the only thing that lasts is the love we have given from our hearts. Ellie
