Last night
I sat at my computer
Writing a poem

When all of a sudden
The lights went out
There I was sitting in the dark
Gazing at a black screen

Oh no, I heard my daughter exclaim
Right in the middle of my favorite show
And now the electricity has to go

It's alright say's her Dad,  I'll get the flashlight
We'll light some candles
And everything will be alright

So in a moment, we are sitting
All together in the flicker of candlelight

I say to my husband, what did we do before
We all had electricity, on cold winter's nights
He said we sat around the fire and listened to
Stories our parents would tell about
Things that had happened and were funny to tell

Then my husband began to tell of the stories
He had heard, sitting by his Mom and Pop's knee
Soon our daughter was listening, laughing, and smiling
With glee
When all of a sudden she announced
This should happen more often!
This is the most fun that I've had in a long, long time.

That's true, I agreed
There are lots of things more fun and exciting
Then the things that we watch on TV
And hour had passed and it seemed like a minute or two
When in a moment the power came on
And what do you think that we did?
We blew out the candles right away
And went back to the things
That we had been doing before.

Guess we can't stand too much of a good thing.

LOL  This is so true!  And truthfully, I would miss the modern conveniences.  But it's not a bad thing to be reminded of what we're giving up for them, is it?

Yea you are so right on the dot with this one. This happens all the time, but hey, at least it happens once in a while rather than never.

Sad but true..Your beautiful poem is a reminder of simpler times that are missed.
