Grandpa

It's almost twenty-eight years
Since he left us.
He would have turned
One hundred five
On our birthday.
I did not know enough
To say goodbye.
I loved him dearly
But remember only bits and pieces -
Holding us in his lap,
Singing his silly songs,
Going to work at the mill,
Fooling my baby brother
Into thinking he had blown off
The finger lost long ago
In the lumber yard.
I see him at the family reunion,
Standing in his kitchen,
Sitting at my wedding.
He did not see our children,
Or the tears and triumphs
Of the intervening years.
He did not see Grammy
Dying by inches before our eyes.
I'm rather glad of that.
Still, I wish he were here
And I could say to him
"Happy birthday, Grandpa!
I still miss you."

Sweet remembrance of your loving grandfather. I was just thinking of my grandmother yesterday and her tender loving care. Thanks, Ellie

Ah wish i knew what it was like to have one.
But I do a little bit with this thanks

Soon it will be time,
For me to move on.

Thanks for the kind replies.  I almost didn't post this, as it really was just writing down what was in my head at the time, and not what I consider my best work.

Ellie - Thanks for sharing that.  Grandparents are really special in our lives.  Mine are always on my mind a lot at this time of year.  I was the first grandchild, and born on Grandpa's birthday.  (Actually, two of his 10 grandchildren were!  Quite a percentage!)

Vicky - Thanks for your sweet reply.  I would like to think he knows I am thinking of him today.  Love and hugs to you!

Maria - That is so sweet!  Thank you.  Everyone should know grandparents.

Debbie - Thank you for your always kind replies.

great poem.  It makes me want to jump in the car and go see my grandpa.  Such genuine warmth and affection flows through in your writing.

a heartwarming tribute KC...I also have fond memories of my grandfather.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Nicolette - You do that, while you still can.    Thanks for reading.

Pegasus - It is a delight to have warmed your already warm heart.     I'm glad if this brought back good memories.

Very loving and thoughtful.
Special people are these critters we call Grandpa's.

Marge- Thank you again.  Having observed my own Dad becoming a Grandpa, I think these critters become more special when they become Grandpas.     hugs< !signature-->

Kaile - I hadn't thought of this as allowing a glimpse into me, although I guess it is.    Thank you for that comment.  And thank you for the birthday wishes.   Big 50 this year.

This is great and got me to thinking that my own Father Time is the Grandpa to 15 grands and 5 greats!  I guess we better get to know all these rugrats a lot better.  Memories are what are the most important, but may not remember that until it is too late.  Thanks for the reminder!  ME

Thank you, Mother Earth. I only have one grandson so far, but getting to know grandbabies is one of the compensations for getting older.     Hope you do build some great memories.
