The man ambled slowly along the dusty old street,
his sweat soaked shirt sagging in afternoon heat,

the brim of the old stetson hat dipped rather low,
shoulders hunched down as dust swirled below,

the pack dug into his shoulders, bony and frail,
the road winding down to a dusty old trail,

he had always been alone, for as long as he knew,
no family, no friends, no companion with who,

to travel the distance through fields high with corn,
to drink sweet hot coffee with, in early morn,

walking the byways, in rain snow and sleet,
trudging through hillside in blistering heat,

he had seen many gardens, some golden, some blue,
some stark, some drab, some beautiful to view,

Some people were friendly, some seemed not to peer,
some turned away faces when he passed all to near,

His manner was quiet, more tranquil than rash,
no backward glances, no concern with the past,

His hair gleamed of silver, face cragged and lined,
all the worlds trouble, showed in it in mime,

Doomed to move on, to wander the land,
never to have a true helping hand,

For what is a man, of not one of HIS sheep?
from moment of birth to moment of sleep,

look then my friend as your brother walks past,
offer your friendship, one that will last,

For that which you offer, today, be it small,
will return ten times ten, enough to save all.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Pegasus...
What a wonderful message you send in this touching poem....

Look then my friend, as your brother walks past,
Offer your friendship, one that will last.

How beautiful that is.

Best

I'm sure we have all been guilty of acting as if we did not see one who is down on their luck. Hopefully you have opened some eyes. Very nicely done.

what is the purpose of our existance if it is not to be our brother's keeper?

Pegasus~
This is such a heartfelt piece.
It reached out and pulled me into it.
We ARE our brother's keeper ...
Thank you for sharing this.
