I Have Never Been In Control

Life gives us many things as we go through the years,
Some of them bring us not the slighest of fears.
Others bring us burdins of great joy and pain,
Regardless of what they are, we accept them just the same.

For life is an adventure, filled with wonder, stress and excitement for sure,
What lies in store for us each day we never know, but we always endure.
If things were laid out for us, and we knew what was around each bend,
We would, as humans, figure out some way to change the end.

As I stop and think of the many turns my life has taken,
I see Gods hand so clearly, my faith has never been shaken.
The many times I could have been taken, something always came between,
There was always a hand given, though the giver was never seen.

The time I fell and would have been dragged into a saw at the mill,
My father never looked back, but this day he did, I see him still.
He sat on a log, and was white as a sheet, shaking like a leaf,
He stopped the carraige that was pulling me in, aware of escaping the unbearable grief.

While riding on the fender of a friends car, I slipped and fell,
I am still amazed that I came through it so well.
Only scratches and bruses were the result of that fall,
I have no doubt he was watching it all.

While in Korea, a sniper put one by my ear, just as the sun came up,
I was sitting in a hole, drinking coffee from my canteen cup.
I was once trapped on on a hill in deep snow, all alone for the enemy to see,
A machine gun was searching, he hit all around me, even my clothes, but not me.

A enemy grenade fell between a friend and I, we both dove away,
He got the worst of it, he was with me again I know on this day.
I have had death whisper in my ear as the bullets went by,
The ground shake with the thunder of artillery bursts where I lie.

As I look at this old world and all its wonders, I clearly see,
The fact that I am alive and here today, was never up to me.
There are those who will never be convinced od this belief I know,
But if that is the way you feel, you should be real sure, if down that path you go.

I too have been spared at least a few times from death. Thanks God. And thanks William for reminding me of how grateful I should be I'm alive today.

I too can think of a time or two where I should have been seriously hurt or even killed. I firmly believe His hand was there protecting me and I am very grateful! Wonderful poem, Bill!

Bill,
Many of us have experienced the providence of God, an unseen hand that has shielded from death and harm. Your poem of these escapes and giving the credit where it belongs is refreshing. Thanks for sharing this thoughtful poem.
