Times were tough in the 30s, you could see it in faces,
I know because I saw it with my family, in all kinds of places.
My brother and I knew we were poor, we were able to just get along,
Kind of like a line in a song I heard, It's hard to make believe there aint nothing wrong.

As I look back on those long ago years, though they were filled with strife,
I know now, though it was tough, it was these hard times that tempered my life.
It is like growing up on a tough rough street, you learn to survive,
Although many nights we had less than enough, it was great to be alive.

There were always those that had plenty, thank God for hose that had,
He's gone now, and I wish for his sake, one of those could have been my Dad.
It's hard to explain to people today, just what it took to keep a family fed,
Luxuries? pop was a nickel, and seldom seen, happiness was a warm clean bed.

Those hard times were long ago, my children now have children of their own,
I feel the reason they are what they are today, is due to the life I've known.
So I hope when my children look back and think on the lives they have had,
That they can feel about theirs, the way I admire and respect, my Mom and Dad.

I think of my Mom and Dad as I read this.  They were kids in the 30's, Mom in a factory town and Dad on a farm.  Times were tough, but Mom always says they didn't know how tough, because everyone else was in the same boat.     I think it did build a lot of character in them.  Thanks for sharing these memories.

To love another person is to see the face of God.

ahhh, yes..I remember well as a child living in coldwater flats, WPA, Salvation Army, and hand me downs. Things are pretty good today but, you never forget..thanks for reminding me how fortunate I really am.

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost
