Finally grown,
the school leaver
stepped out into
the bright promising world
expectantly

Little did he know that
ignoring malicious rumours, dealing with two-faced hypocrites,
fending off sharp daggers, coming to terms with favouritism,
were part and parcel
of his job scope

They conflicted with everything
he had been taught
They drained the colour
out of black and white
til everything was shades of grey

Confused and weary,
he no longer knew
what to believe

How true! Young and ready to take on the world, we jump right into it, never fully prepared until we experience it first-hand!Great Poem!

Book learning... a great foundation of knowledge that is slowly eroded by the truth of reality.  Were that the world was so simple as to play by the rules.  Good luck!

I really liked this poem......theory and practice......sometimes the practice is what let's you down due to the immense amount of dedication. In this case.....dedication to understand the truth.

good one.

ah reminds me of me when I left school. so true.

Life has got to chnage,
Nothing stays the same,
Soon it will be time,
For me to move on.

This is a sad tale of shattered ideals, and probably all too often true.  Life does look so much easier when we're young, doesn't it?

To love another person is to see the face of God.

Kaile,
Great expetations are often dashed by bitter reality. Hold on to your ideals and make a positive change in this world as you have the opportunity. Good thoughtful read.

"They drained the colour

...a fascinating concept! draining colour (spelt correctly YAY!!!  ) out of the colourless takes this into the realms of metaphor beyond colour into "life" ... nice writing kaile...

I really like this, black and white meaning what we learn in school and from textbooks, and the areas of grey...

Much enjoyed. I recall saying the same thing to my boss on the last day of my internship.
"What have you learnt" he asked.
I said,"That reality is different from the perfect scenarios out of the school textbook"
