                    My Brother

My brother wrote
His first poem.
What he wrote
I already knew
In proseā€¦
But I cried for
What we have ceased
To be, because
There was no time,
No room, or
Someone disliked
Who we were,
What we did,
How we felt,
What we believed.
We amputated
Parts of us
And stuffed them
Under a cushion,
In a file drawer,
In the deep freeze
Under the year-old fish sticks.
We tried to forget
We were maimed.
Nobody  noticed,
But we remembered.
We missed the lost pieces
Of us.

One day we found
Those who helped us
Find ourselves.
They did not complete us,
But loved us completely.
Against the rules,
We loved them back.

Now, miles apart,
We stand together,
No longer willing
To hide who we are
For the sake of peace,
Daring at last
To be free.
Dona nobis pacem.

I saw myself in your poem. My brothers and I have  overcome a past that only siblings can understand.  It is a triumph to find peace at last, within family!

The last line is perfect!
Dona nobis pacem. Grant us peace.
Excellent Job, your poetry is always so insightful!

I have not stood in your shoes, but is it all right if I say, "I understand"?  I do!

Thank you for sharing.

this is really well done, and i would say that debbie is right, only siblings can understand, but then sunshine blows that theory   i have not found my way back to my brothers and sister, but i do understand also   i wrote one about my sibs once, though i don't write much about my family, will mail it if you would like for me to share it with you

Thank you all for reading and replying.
Poet deVine - Thanks for the "intriguing"!  It was a struggle to get on paper, and it's great to have a positive response.

Marcy - Thank you for the cheer and for the kind comments.  I wish I really were wise.

Debbie - Yes, siblings do understand some things nobody else does.  Our family was never really at odds with each other, but life often takes you far away from your roots.  I just recently learned that my brother have had some surprisingly similar experiences, things we didn't talk about until now.  Thanks for understanding.

Karilea - Of course it's all right to say you understand!  We do not have to have stood in each other's shoes to have stood in the same places.  Nobody's experience is exactly like mine, but everything I have felt has been felt by someone else.  Poetry just helps us bridge the gaps, doesn't it?

kid - I would love to see what you wrote about your sibs.  This isn't really only about my brother (I actually have two, and a sister).  It is about giving up parts of yourself to please others (in our cases, mostly our spouses), and trying to get those things back. That is why I was so impressed by what you posted here.  Parts of it said exactly what I wanted to say.  Thanks for sharing that.

awesome mar..i love this so much..

its odd how you dont find out about the familiar tales of yours and your siblings lives til later in life..my brother and i have had some good talks now that we're older..we seem to connect in many places    although..he was never a conformist..lol

i know about this..being different to be the same.. one day we wake up and realize that we do indeed miss those pieces of us that we tucked away..

i'm glad you found your pieces

hugs, dg

Thanks, dg.  You seem to have caught on about the missing pieces earlier than I did.  Good for you!  And it is surprising to realize how much like our brothers and sisters we can be without even realizing it.  You know I always appreciate your comments.  Glad you liked this.  hugs

KCS~
Kind of like pieces of a puzzle that fit to make the whole picture.

'We stand together'

That says it all for me.

Your poem reminded me of this song...  And I give you a standing ovation...   Very well put..

Oh kcs ~ How wonderfully you have written of the sibling thing....I had 3 older brothers, now I have just 1.  We don't live near each other, but we now make a point of getting together a couple of times a year, and.... talk on the phone often.  I often regret that it took losing the others before we finally realized we were all had left....But at least we enjoy the time we can share and our familes now stand together.  Thanks for sharing this, it is wonderful.  Bonnie

Yes, Marge, both our families and ourselves become puzzles sometimes.  When you realize you have arrived at the same place, even if by different routes, you're halfway to solving the puzzle.  Thanks for reading and commenting.

And BWA, thanks for the standing ovation.   This musician sees that as the perfect compliment.

Thank you for your comments, Bonnie.  I'm glad you're staying close to your brother.  Too often people wait until it's too late to get close to the people who should be most important to them.  It feels good to rediscover each other, doesn't it?
