I went out to the garden this morning,
It was a cold and dreary day,
But I had to dig up the delicate bulbs,
And get them put away.
While on my knees in dampness,
I glanced over to see a rose,
Covered with a dusty glaze,
Standing proudly as if it knows;
It's the only flower with blossoms,
The rest were frozen last week,
But the rose survived the icy blast,
With no sign of being weak.
Its nile green stems still sturdy,
Its thorns looking ready to bite,
A cream colored bud unfurling,
Opening up to a glorious white.
Deep green leaves encased in ice,
Hanging on...looking quite bold,
While the tiny little violas,
Seemed shivering in the cold.
The greenery of the summer,
Has turned to a dark red maroon,
As the bitter winds of autumn,
Start singing a mournful tune.
It looks like snow is in the clouds,
There will soon be a blanket of white,
And the kalidescope that was summer,
Will sleep through the long winter's night.

"And the kalidescope that was summer,

Such lovely imagary and I loved the last lines

Sometimes you have to let go and move on,
But never let go of the memories.

dearest Bonnie; I hate to think about when the first frost hits here! Oh how I'd love to see that rose! I have to ditto Maria, i love those last two lines. Another beauty from your pen.  love, ellie

Summers haunting melody
that awakens
the butterflies,
calling them to join
the dance
in their silent song
of praise to God.

Bonnie~
Remarkable how the rose can burst forth
with such beauty in the midst of the cold.
A wonderful write.

Bonnie,
there's something sad about the end of summer & the approach of winter--but isn't it nice we can have some of all of it.  Lovely poem!   David

I love roses, so any poem about them has an automatic star in my book. This was one of the most beautiful ones I have ever seen. The imagery is awesome, I could see the whole thing.
