To sit and watch the restless flow
Beside the river bank
The Kingfisher darting to and fro
The broken boat that sank

Bull Rush song on gentle breeze
Humming to the sky
Otters trying to be a tease
I watch the world go by

Memories flood and fill my head
With days of yesterday
We used to come and make our bed
In that old stack of hay

Friendly faces laugh at me
Their smiles are wide and bright
Mischief in their eyes I see
They’re bathed in warm sunlight

Friends now sailing through their life
Adrift upon their boat
Some friends gave up along the way
For them ………it wouldn’t float

The Buttercups in spangled gold
Gather gaily along the bank
They would tell if lies were told
And when your story ….sank

As I sit with wandering thought
And dream …….of yesterday
A cry rings out a fish is caught
But the next one……. got away

In gossamer blur the Dragon Fly
Drifts in and dips his toe
The Lilly pads just float and sigh
Their song is soft and low

And then the farmer big with brawn
A really frightening sight
‘Get out ’he’d shout ‘you’ve crushed my corn’
I’d dream of him all night

We’d all play soldiers… dustbin lids
Would make do as our shield
After all we were only…. kids
As we rushed across the field

Dirty shirts and tattered shorts
Our proud new uniform
And old stick was a gun of sorts
Our orders cuneiform

Yes this old bank brings back those times
When children ruled the world
When ‘Thinking Big’ was our only crime
And promises unfurled

It always seems at times like this
When you think of life gone by
That when you stole your first loves’ kiss
These days would never die

But this cruel old world just beats you down
And puts you in your place
And if you walk and don’t look ‘round
They’re gone without a trace

So when you’re feeling down and out
And all life skies are grey
Don’t give up just give a shout
And quietly slip away

Take your self and your thoughts away
And slowly fill your tank
And if you haven’t got one of your own
Share my riverbank

Everyone's welcome

Jon, you make your poetry come alive with color and sincerity. This is a beautiful invitation. How can one not accept!?

Jon,
I love this story. I can picture all the antics you and your friends shared.
You are right, when life seems tough we can always retreat back to days of old.
Wonderful poem! My kind of "music" so to speak!

I enjoyed this.  You paint a vivid picture, and I saw it all in my mind (which is not a bad way to visit such a spot).  I especially love the kingfishers.  Thanks for a good read.

Jon, How beautifully you describe those lost days of childhood.  I spend my daydreams on the shores of a lake, seems nothing can replace those carefree days.  Bonnie
