They couldn't keep up with the manic pace of progress.
So the myths faded into obscurity,
Occasionally coming out of the woodwork
To pick up an unemployment check.
They have been replaced by celebrities,
Sports heroes, movie stars and musicians.
Now, no one knows the Argonaughts
From a new expansion team,
And Hercules could be the name of some
Pro wrestler for all they care.
Sirens and wood nymphs croon softly
On street corners for pocket change nowadays,
Luring unsuspecting passers-by into shallow puddles.
There's no room for magic and mystery here.
We want reasons, explanations,
Cold hard facts we can see and touch.
We don't need the myths, no matter how much
They might need us.

I enjoyed this read because it is so true.  When we experience the magic and mystery no one believes us so those that don't need proof and reasons live a lonely life!

Glad you all enjoyed it...I miss mythology.  Was a time when myth made up the collective consciousness.  It unified people--a single code of ideas and stories that made them whole.  Now, we have--as I said--movie stars and ball teams.  Depressing.  What will our common myths be, I wonder?  Probably a Presidental scandal of some sort.

Hi gofor42,

First I would like to welcome you to passions its so nice to have you here.

This is a true and sad poem, what I find amazing is that as children we are thought mythology through so many different avenues from rhymes, tv, and school but as an adult it is not permitted, I find this to be controdictive, thank you so much for sharing.

Love, Cerenity

I know, I know... I should leave most of the old poems back hidden away.  But this one is so cool I had to bring it back up for all to have the chance to read again. Great work!

With a little piece of tomorrow,
You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye.
Because today won't last forever,
And the past will only make you cry.

The nice thing about myths is they have heroes. They're not so easy to come by these days.  Glad this came up again.

Yes, heroes are definitely lacking in this day and age, when the anti-hero seems to be in control, or when the idea of a "hero" is the guy with the big guns who runs around blowing everything up.

Oh, I agree with you so completely...this encourages me all the more to keep writing my fairy poems! Ellie

As long as we continue to write poetry then the magic and myth will continue to live on!
