           Life As It is

The picture stared back at him, seemgly mocking his lined face and gray hair,
Fifty years had changed that face a lot, but the spirit of the boy still lingered there.
Those eyes so clear, they saw only then, but what they saw was bright and clear,
Looking into the face, the old man saw only courage, no trace of fear.

His eyes grew misty as he thought of years long ago, years that had slipped away,
Memories tend to gather, as time rolls on, seems life is just a lot of yesterday.
It is hard to disregard the fact, that there are more of that than tomarrows,
Oh but hasn't life been great, the pleasures far over shadow the sorrows.

The hair on that young heard is dark, shinny and full with a healthy glow,
He felt his now thin and graying thatch, and wished it wasn't so.
He lost his self for a moment, back to times of his eagerness to know,
But he could not stay, for life had not held him, it had let him grow.

The figure he looked upon no longer was, it was in fact , only a shell,
It had been the seed of one of Gods children, and it had flourshed well.
The old man turned from the picture, walked to a mirror, and quietly did stare,                   That face looking back held it all, he saw his life resting there .

Would he like to return to those long ago years, he thought on that awhile,
With all he knew now, no doubt life would be a ball, that brought a smile,
But that would mean giving up all the memories of these glorious past years,
He knew he was content, and those wrinkles, just paths for tears.

Once more he turned to the picture, as if he might find something more,
There were no answers, he stared for a moment, not sure what he was searching for.
Finally the old man left the room, his steps were slow and a bit unsure,
But he knew he was happy, he had done his best, and life had let him endure.

Oh, Bill, Job well done. "Life as it is", is a lovely reflection and walk down the memories of yesterday. It's always good when the look back is met with a smile. Enjoyed this concept and read very much.  Love, marcy

bill..this is so wonderful...to be able to look back on life in such a manner of contentment..that must be an awesome feeling...i tend to look back in longing for the past..it takes a bit of vicious clawing and crawling sometimes to get back to reality......

youve written a mighty poem here..
as always, enjoyed the read immensely

Seems whenever I look back into my memories I only see the mistakes made along the way. Your writing has sent me on a backward journey of discovery of all the good things but I sure have to throw out a lot of junk to find them.
Thank you for an excellent read.

I can never get over the kindness of the people in this group, your kind words never fail to touch me, I think most of us look back with some regret, we haven't done it all right, but if we stop and count the things that matter in our lives today, most of us will find more happines than sorrow, and 71 years does give me a good long look,

I am proud to report I have had my first poem published, I CALL HIM BROTHER is in the Sept. issue of the Leatherneck, that is a Marine magazine, so you have to treat me with respect now...........Thanks again for all the kind words, it doesn't take much to make an old man happy, Bill

Bill - this is an awesome poem.  A reminder that time holds still for no one.

"....seems life is just a lot of yesterday."

Wonderful and touching.

Congrats on your first published work!!!

Wow, this is a good poem about reminscing, William. I like the way that you were creative with words in order to make them rhyme.
