Tending The Bar

Slumped,
     nursing a stale draft,
     warmed by sweaty palms
     holding tight onto
     my lifeline,

hopes and dreams
     swimming in the glass,
     reflecting the losses
     draining a face;

     colorless.

Lifting it
     to my lips,
     I quench my thirst
     with lost hopes,
     clench my teeth
     against the bitterness.

     Yet I crave more,
     just one more
     to torture myself.

I down the first dream
     that floats to my tongue
     then swallow shamelessly
     another two.

Summoning the barkeep
with the crook of my finger,
     I slip a crumpled twenty
     clumsily into his breast pocket.

Avoiding his eyes
I ask him to call me a cab
     (shifting nervously on the stool)
and will he cover for me?

I'm done tending bar.

I've gone back a few years with this one, to my early 20's.

Glad you can relate. Thank you.  ...chanson~

This entire poem struck somewhere deep inside, but the above was the stanza that held my attention longest... Very well written.

With a little piece of tomorrow,
You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye.
Because today won't last forever,
And the past will only make you cry.
