On the road

contentedly waiting for nothing in particular
the ginger cat sat on the express train
London to Inverness running through shiny black midnight
in 1950s calm
from her golden eyes she sees the compartment door
lying slightly ajar
all around her the sounds of steam
and the clack clack of otherwise silent travel
past fields still green in the dark
houses grey with dull red roofs
inside the world of husbands and wives
and little families
all asleep
buttery warmth wells from the underseat heaters
she purrs appreciatively
the seat is plush red patterened
and her claws scrape in sensuous motion on its surface
on the walls are faded photographs of landscapes
lost in time
brown old hills calm and serene beneath tinted blue skies
and lakes lying inviting in peaceful places you ache to visit
in the small hours of dawn
you can imagine the whole world waiting

and falling dreaming through the last carriage
we see the plume of grey smoke spiraling
big black wheels disappear into starlight
the tracks are quiet as night
and all is magic dark

the woods are lovely, dark, and deep, but I have promises to keep, and many miles to go before I sleep...Frost

Allan~
Quite the trip ...
enjoyed the imagery so very much.
As I read it aloud, I could hear the sounds of the train in the night.

Allan

sounds like fairy-tale world. Have you thought of writing a fairy tale? I bet you'd be good.

I really enjoyed all the images this brought to mind...

With a little piece of tomorrow,
You'll have to kiss yesterday goodbye.
Because today won't last forever,
And the past will only make you cry.
