As I look into your eyes
I see the ruins of my youth
Where dreams were real the Eagle flies
We were the ones who knew the truth

The baton passed is in good hands
A quick young eye to spot the swerve
The race is on to see who stands
And who will fall …who’s got the nerve

The battle you’ll fight with relish now
While the splendour of the victory calls
When anguish wrinkles your young brow
The trophies won will deck your halls

But keep the contest straight and true
Don’t bend the rules just play the game
So when recollections visit you
The ghost of torment you can tame

A fighter young he feels no pain
He sees no suffering tastes no blood
But let me tell you once again
A victory won’s not always good

When in penultimate rest you lay
Reflecting on the battle ground
How long and cheerless is the day
If you have cheated every round

No! Lift your head and keep it true
Seek the victory… play it fair
So no one can recall of you
There was a hollow contest there

Pick up the baton run your race
Let every step be firm and strong
I hope the sun shines on your face
And victory heralds a happy song

Jon; This is a wise and loving father whose child is blessed to have such a one. Doubly blessed that he is a gifted poet besides. Ellie

Summers haunting melody
that awakens
the butterflies,
calling them to join
the dance
in their silent song
of praise to God.

Jon, Great message put in beautiful verse.
I believe this is my first piece to see on the subject matter. Cheating, of any fashion, never wins! Very good! Marcy

Thanx everybody...............thanx Denise your great reply is special indeed...you too Bonnie .........print away.

My son gradutated last month and has recently moved to the big city....you bring them up and then you have to let go....I felt that I had surely handed over the baton to the next generation it was elating and frightening all at the same time....and so the poem was born......it just kinda flowed...glad you all like it.

Jon~
This is wonderfully done.
So encouraging and full of spirit.

I'd be proud to share it with a group
of teens that I mentor -
May I ?
