On the road

we were young and knew nothing much
but we were ready to learn
and wandered through morning fields with the sun on our backs
waded waist high in the yellow feathers, our horizons bright

we explored the forest and its soft green places
the sky blinking blue above us
we roamed the brown paths, fields and moorlands
hoping under red sunsets for wonderful tomorrows
dreaming of forever in nights moonfilled and starbright
adventures calling from every branch and stone,
every stream, hillside and meadow

and every living room took us in
our eyes all questions and hopes sky high
with nothing to disturb our endless search
for adventure and feelings of fun
and dreams we knew could be real.

the adult world we didn't see with eyes so true
we wove a fantasy of dreams and wishes
with no reality behind our airy creations

and so fell to being older.

then we saw the world very clear
that we'd stepped through some hidden door,
trapped, and could go back no more.

the dreams, forgotten,
sank as stones
coming to rest
heavy behind our hearts.

a cynical world seemed to laugh at us,
our hopes
and what we'd learned from starlight.

but on nights when the stars are clear
and the moon shines quietly in the sky
we feel the dreams still weaving their magic
still waiting,
still calling
just beyond our fingertips
and we smile across the years
remembering the days
of childhood we shared

and that warm morning light.

Oh Allan this is just so beautiful, and ohhh so true.  Love the whole poem, most especially this -

"just beyond our fingertips
and we smile across the years
remembering the days
of childhood we shared

and that warm morning light."

Such precious memories of those youthful days, written in such a lovely way.  Bonnie

Allan; So lovely, and I can relate so well. I met my husband when we were very young, and we had to grow up together. Your words echo our life together. Where does it go?
thank you. Ellie

the butterflies,
calling them to join
the dance
in their silent song
of praise to God.

No.
Not over the top at all! Silly you, allan!
Just wonderful like it is.
Oppressive and a bit scary, yes.
Made me feel like Alice in Wonderland in reverse.
Wonderland is so much better than reality!

Allan,
I'm so glad I decided to read this. So good.
Really liked the image I got from these lines...

"but on nights when the stars are clear
and the moon shines quietly in the sky
we feel the dreams still weaving their magic
still waiting,
still calling
Just beyond our fingertips"

Oh, smiles to you.

Old time is still a-flying,
And this same flower that smiles today
To-morrow will be dying.
