A joyous occasion it should be
A whole family sitting down
Cozily for dinner

Yet all is silent
except for
the slurping of the soup
and the occasional
"Pass me the chilli sauce, please"
All look intently at their plates,
a fierce concentration almost intimdating
as if their chicken chop may just
turn glittering gold any time

No one asks about my day
No one shares interesting ancedotes
about their day
No one cracks silly jokes to lighten
the sombere mood
No one even smiles or winks

Maybe in distance, but never in heart
We connect
You all are my family
You all will be the ones to stay

But do we really
understand one another at all?
Do we ever attempt
to bridge the widening gap between us?

Wow, this is excellent writing. The message is sad though, and to think how many family's truly are like this. I feel you met the challenge well, nice job.

A different twist on the phrase...Well Done!!  This piece was a little sad...a family by blood but is it by ties??  Good piece!!  Thanks for taking the challenge Kaile!!

Strong piece.  Family's aren't always as close as it seems they should. Great job.

So close by blood, sadly so far apart short of disfunctional   and that's
sad

rings very true
