The winter’s night was clear and bright
The frost clung to the ground
With icy fingers against the glass
He strained to hear the sound
‘O little town of Bethlehem’ crept through sacred doors
He wiped the sleep out of his eyes
And watched for Santa Claus

The sky was black and crystal clear
There was a magic in the air
Next doors cat slept on the mat
And the moon ……a happy stare
His excited breath against the pane
Condensed with watery mist
He stared out on this Christmas night
And his teddy ...hugged and kissed

Santa Claus was on his way
The thrill ran through his frame
His small white nose squashed snowy flat
It was such an electric game
And then at once a whoosh of stars
Across the midnight sky
He couldn’t really hear the bells
But he didn’t want to try

The very next thing his ear was cocked
He didn’t want to dare!
But it was true there really was
A creaking on the stair!
He jumped back in his rifled bed
And pulled the covers tight
And with toy dreams rushing round his head
Slept peaceful through the night

The stocking packed with joy filled fun
On Christmas early morn
The paper lay around the room
All crinkled bruised and torn
He played and played throughout the day
And Christmas lunch so grand!
Not knowing where this joy came from
But he’d grow to understand

That Christmas night he went to bed
The toys stacked in their place
He’d laughed so much for many hours
It was such a hectic pace
His cherub face was clean and bright
His prayers a happy sigh
How could he ever forget this day?
When Santa Claus stopped by!

I can't find the words to explain how this poem made me feel.  The peaceful christmas flow was great.  I hope to see this poem in christmas as well.

This is wonderful Jon.  I cried because it made me yearn for the Christmas' unremembered of my own childhood.  I also cried with delight because of the memories brought sharply into focus of my children at Christmastime.  This is really beautiful.

Thanx Munda,Kelieth,Child and Denise your comments are very kind and gratefuly accepted.

I know this piece is a bit out of season, but it just came to me and I was sort of driven to write it.

I'm in the studio at the moment so forgive me everyone if I don't get to respond as much at the moment,

But I'll get around   promise.

Jon, You make me want to have Christmas right here and now, I want to start singing Christmas carols and snuggle on the couch by the warmth of the woodstove. I want to give thanks for all I have, and reflect on those in need. Oh the Christmas spirit visited in the midst of summer's beginning how delightful. thanks for sending my mind to a delightful place, excellent poem please do repost at Christmas.
