I was sixteen and
you were a blonde, blue-eyed stranger,
who washed my clothes,
made my breakfast,
drove me to school.

Many years later, I wake each morning
and see your face smiling back at me in my mirror.
you, who waited patiently until
I finally discovered
that you had always been there.

Now, when I see myself as a stranger
reflected in the eyes of my children,
I  recognize the sacrifices that you made for me,
your beloved child
and I know who you are.

I feel your pride swelling near my heart,
your laughter in my voice,
your tears against my cheek.
and I take comfort in my discovery
that against all odds,

I have become you. I know who you are.
You are my dear, dear mother, who turned away
all the glittering gifts the world has to offer,
so that you could pass on to me the greatest gift of all.

Yourself.

Debbie we often take for granted the things our mothers do, because they do these things so well and without asking for a word of thanks. a wonderful tribute to your mother.

Debbie,

This is a great ode to mom.  She's very lucky to have such a talented daughter.

Thanks everybody!  I wrote this poem for mothers day in an effort to tell her just what she means to me.

I didn't have a great relationship with her as a teenager, I just couldn't relate to her.
It wasn't until I got older that I began to understand the sacrifice's a mother makes for her child.

This was my opportunity to thank her!

Debbie..this is beautiful. Sometimes we never realize how much mom's mean till we are one. This is wonderful evidence of your understanding of her sacrifices. Well done!!
