It's nice to know you,
do I really know you?
Are you who you said you are,
or did you tell me all about
who you'd like to be?

Faces imagined,
touches perceived
through a wire, along a line
from who knows where
ending up right here, with me.

Ghost writer,
is that your real name?
Writing pretty phrases,
for my eyes to read and mind to ponder
before I go to sleep.

What is this thing, this medium
for sharing ideas, hopes, and dreams?
In an impersonal world,
leave it to the poet
to find a forum from which to speak.

It can be so inpersonal, but personal at the same time, through all these wires reading poetry at this site and others...The hand touch isn't there, but the words are and I like that and am grateful for that.

Very good, Jana! It really is strange, isn't it? We feel like we've known some people all our lives and in reality we've never even met.

Made be chuckle at the end line on this one. Poets are a breed all their own I think somewhat like starving artists.

Jana,
What is this thing, this medium? Great questions, as enlightening as this medium is it is also part of the problem with society today. Impersonal communication without direct interaction allowing the further promotion of isolationism. As a people we are losing our direct contact in the lives of others........I'm done, I'll put my soapbox away.
Your poem is great food for thought.
I APPRECIATE your thoughtful poetry! THANKS!

one of the things I like about posting here is that I don't have to be there when people read my poems, while I want people to read my poems and want to communicate a message often that message is personal so I feel kind of uncomfortable or naked in front of people. It is kind of impersonal but on one level you get to know people through their words their thoughts as opposed to making judgements based on looks or their actions. Though that also means that people could only be revealing certain parts of themselves, as they do on other sites but that is why we have the oath of peotic truth at passions.

anyway ranting on here,  a great poem, got me pondering as well.

JOY14:  You have it...it's impersonal (we don't see each other), but it's so personal (we tell each other our inner thoughts).

dsnyder:  Yes, I do feel like I've know the people here a long time.  One thing that contributes to this, I feel, is the open minded approach that everyone is able to bring to this site.

Septsong:  Poets/writers are unique.  They don't just observe life...they disect all the aspects of it that touch and interest them.

Dennis:  You can get your soap box out anytime.  You have a point.  What can we do about it, though?  Everyone is so busy and  impatient.  Through this medium I feel like I've gained insights, knowledge, understanding.  Things that most people 'physically' around me (as I go through life) would never have the courage or the inclination to share.

Brian:  I know how you feel.  I can't watch people read my work, either.  I would just read too much into each facial expression.  I like this medium.  I also like that I can come to it when I want, and stay few minutes...or hours.

Jon:  I like your version better.  It has an empathy that I just didn't achieve in my poem.

Thanks to all for their replys, comments.  I loved reading them.

jana..this is a good one..

i enjoy sharing my poetry..but some people are just not into that sort of thing..and also, some of the people who know me on a personal level would get to know me better than i might want them to by reading my poems..so posting them here, i can bleed out my heart, and those who would like to comment will..those who dont get it, wont..and either way, that ok..

its true on both hands..we know each other so well by reading the inner-most thoughts we share here..but on the other hand, we only know the parts that have been shared...

very thought provoking piece of work

I love the poem and all the conversations/thoughts it provoked. A few years ago, a forum like this didn't exist. I wonder how I survived without out. I never reveal myself in real life and find it hard to do so except in the feelings behind my words..thank you Jana, for the poem and the inspiration.
