             MIGHTY MEN
How can I tell this so you will understand?
Why so many came to this rocky frozen land.
I was but one, who left our friendly shore,
Sadly for some, it was forever more.

They killed us in the heat of summer,on a ridge called, no name.
Those that were on that bloody hill, would never be the same.
Next came Inchon, then on through Seoul, we lost many more,
But we knew we would, that's the way of war.

Soon the heat of summer changed to frozen days of snow,
North to Yudam-ni, still we fell, how the numbers did grow.
From out of China came a new enemy, over 200,000 strong.
Army Gen. Almond said write us off, but these were Marines and he was wrong.

The Chosin was a special kind of hell, the cold was unreal, enemy all around,
If God was bound to test them, a more hellesh place could not be found.
They froze and they died, but they took with them ten times more,
They did what they had to, some people just under estimate the Corps.

The years have passed, most have forgot what those mighty men went through,
The courage to do what they did is hard to understand by most of you.
When there is no war, no threat to your liberties, and the things you like to do,
It is easy to forget, for you have no need of those we call, the chosin few.

bill..
wow..this is gripping..

i think writing is a wonderful way to manage the stories of such a thing as war that must constantly tumble thru your heart and head..i know there are many soldiers who cant shake the war..i cant even begin to imagine going thru, and witnessing such things..

i really enjoy your stories in poetry..and hope to read many more..thanks for sharing!

We should never forget their courage and their sacrifices on our behalf. Well told, Bill!

You're pretty good at drawing people into your stories, too.  Maybe you should be a writer!  Thanks for sharing.

Bill - I'm with Jana - maybe you should write a book about the experiences you (and many others) have gone through.  Gripping tale.  The sharpness of it pulled me up short.  No, I don't know first hand the hell that our Veterans went through but I have heard many tales and my heart breaks from the horrors that they had to deal with.  I, for one, will never forget what they gave.

You've captured and displayed a horrible time for many, yet through it you have expressed well the gratitude all men should have for the men and women who give and gave so much of themselves for humankind.
